Gigablast Modem/Router Options
Gigablast is available at my address in San Diego, CA and I'd like to purchase this Cox service if I could only learn what kind of modem and router equipment is supported. I'd prefer to buy my own equipment instead of renting and I'd prefer a setup where the modem and router are separate. Does anyone know if using your own modem and/or router is a possibility for Cox Gigablast or does Cox require you to use some specific, combined modem/router rental? Does Gigablast work with a DOCSIS modem even though it's supposed to be a fiber connection? I wish I could learn these things from Cox but I haven't been able to.
Cox's online information on Gigablast is next to zero as far as I can tell, and I've spoken to four different Cox reps and no one can supply an answer. I'm hoping the Cox community can help instead!

Gigablast is fiber. There is no modem and there is no coaxial so no DOCSIS. If fiber is available in your area, they run it to your house and install a Optical Network Terminal (ONT) on the side of your house and run ethernet into your house. They supply a Netgear router(not a gateway but forget model number) but you can use your own. You don't rent anything. The Netgear router is given to you and the ONT doesn't belong to you so you don't have to pay for it.
There is shutterbug that a Gigabit service(Gigasphere?) might also become available using DOCSIS 3.1, but those would require special modems which aren't available to the consumer yet, and just became available to some ISP's very recently. I wouldn't expect to see anything come out of that for a year, and even then only in a few select areas.

Unless they changed what they give you, then the Netgear router Cox supplies for Gigablast is the Netgear R6300 AC1750. If you happen to have something better than that, then use it instead.

Internal antennas.... Not a bad router, but there are a LOT better options out there IMO being it's 3 years old. Why is Cox in love with Netgear?

I just got Gigablast in Phoenix and yes, it is still the Netgear R6300 AC1750. I have a pretty large house and I get a good signal on 2.4 or 5 Ghz throughout. But as previously mentioned, you don't pay anything extra for it and you can buy whatever router you want. I'm pretty happy with it as I have had speeds up to 940 Mbps both up and down. I upgraded from the 100 Mbps Premier and got Gigablast plus HBO, plus the highest level phone plan and my bill went DOWN $5 per month!

I know..quoting myself, but I wanted to give props for going ethernet from the ONT. I think they learned from FIOS's mistaske. The fact that you can get fiber internet and coaxial cable completely separately differently is wonderful. Cox has always taken a more hangs off approach to ISP, providing the bandwidth and allowing the customer to handle everything else. Not blocking outbound 587, full support for stand alone modem and the ability to JUST have internet or JUST have cable service is huge. For the record, you can have direct ethernet from the ONT with FIOS and cable at the same time, but its such a pain in the bug that it cost more to make it work then you save on the bill over the first year. Now just give me Gigasphere with unlimited data and I will give you the world. :0)

Curious as to when Cox Gigablast will be installed in Phoenix. I was told Phoenix installation would be finished by end of last year. A friend 1 mile down the road has it installed but not available in my neighborhood.
Have there been delays in the install?
Thanks for any info you can provide.

There is no info anyone here can provide, all you can do is check availability on your address with the Gigablast web page.

Hello zachweg,
We are working as fast as we can to deliver Gigablast service to all of our customers. Sadly, I do not have a date for specific areas.
Thanks,
