Getting channels on tv without a box

I was told that I could receive about 50 channels without an extra box for another tv in the house, but when I connected the coax to the tv I cannot receive any channels.  I have run the auto program but to no avail, I have also tried entering channels but just get snow.  Any suggestions or should I just get another box?

First thing to check is that the TV's tuners is on the correct mode. Usually there will be a ANT or AIR mode and a Cable or CATV mode. You want cable or CATV. If it further asks what type, pick STD.

If that doesn't work, then that outlet was probably not connected at time of install. Alot of times the technician only activates the outlets your using at the time so signal isn't wasted going to area of your house you don't (or didn't) use.  You can try to fallow the line and see if its just unscrewed or you can call Cox and they can activate the line. I think its like 25-30$? But sometimes it's waived depending on the situation.

Hi BigdaddyQ,

Trikein provided excellent suggestions for verifying the TV Channel Scan settings. If you aren't able to pick up any channels after running the CATV/DTV/Cable channel scan, it probably means the outlet was not activated during the install. If you'd like, I can certainly have a tech come out and get that outlet working for you. There may be a trip charge (approx $45, I believe), but I'm happy to verify that for you. Feel free to email me at coxhelp@cox.com if the channel scans are unsuccessful!

Test the same connection with a television you know for sure works.  If it still cannot receive the analog channels then theres a problem with the signal to that outlet.

Good idea. Another little trick is to lick your finger and touch the middle copper wire. Should feel a little stronger then touching a 9volt battery if it's live. Also you can look at the coaxial and see if it says anything helpful. Sometimes you can have older Dish Network(or other) wiring going to a part of your house from a previous provider/tennent.

PS. Thanks for helping out Junkerprime. The more brains the merrier. Nice to see the forum user base expanding. Hope to see you around.

Hey Becky,

I have a similar predicament. Not sure if the cable is not connected or what. I know I asked them to connect it when they first came out so I'm hoping it is. However, my main question is, how much would it cost to get another box?

Thanks!

This is technical forum, so questions like that are best discussed privately. Also, its unlikely your problem is related to OP. If nothing else you should make your own thread.

Correct, and correct. For account-related questions, you can email us at coxhelp@cox.com. You can also always call your local sales department listed here during their normal hours.

You can find basic pricing information here, though there may be additional conditions that influence the monthly price of equipment such as how many receivers you have already and whether it's a Contour/whole-home setup, so you may be best off checking with someone.
