Game Lag

I am experiencing a lot of game lag when online. Every once in a while I have a few online games that are outstanding but only for a short while on days that don't come too often. I have everything hard wired for my Xbox 360 and I'm running an AC router for the speed. The router doesn't seem to be the problem since I have the same issue when wired directly to my modem. I have Cox premier internet residential service. When playing online it seems as if the info passing through the pipe hits the Cox server and takes a short time to be processed and passed on to me. I upgraded my service plan to the premier but haven't noticed any substantial improvement in my gaming. When connected directly to my modem my speeds average over 100 down and over 30 up. Good speed but it makes no difference with the game lag. Without the lag I can dominate when playing online but for most days and for now there's too much lag to do much good. It's very frustrating to say the least. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Would it be possible to try some speed tests to your local test server in the Hampton Roads area?  I see you've been testing to a different market for some reason an the results look like they could be better.

Download Speed: 126 Mbps

Upload Speed: 43 Mbps

Latency: 32 millisec

Cox Market: Northern Virginia

This is without the router. PC direct to the modem using Cox speed test.

That definitely looks to be in order, still not sure why it's testing to Northern Virginia though.  Can you try it without the router for a while and see if the connection is more consistent?

I tried this again like you suggested and like numerous times before there is no difference. I'm thinking there is a latency problem with the Cox server taking care of my area. I've gone through everything on my end including having service technicians come and check everything out at my place. It doesn't matter what time of day or what day it is. High usage times or low usage times make no difference. It is still lagging. I think the bottle neck has something to do with the Cox server. It's like there is a pause from the time the data hits the Cox server and the time the server sends it on to me. Your thoughts???

Not sure of a way to nail down a particular IP address during game play since the host is always changing AND I do not know of a way to find an IP address for a host through an Xbox 360. I performed a test with a known public address for a sample to hopefully give some idea as to what I have. Not sure if there would be a preferred address but without much to go on this is what I come up with in order to provide a sample. Please advise for further action.

 Please see below for results.

What games are you having issues with? Even though most use P2P, there are still central match making servers which can cause problems.

Also, do you have any internet issues on the PC? Or is this just a 360 issue?

Games are Call of Duty/ Ghost. I had the same issues with Black Ops II. Playing tonight has been better but I would like consistency.

No internet issues on the PC. I notice this on the Xbox due to the lag in the 1st person shooter games. Things tend to go extremely fast and when I'm the one lagging I am nothing more than a target.

Getting rid of lag is like getting rid of the hipcups, there is a 1001 one ways to do it, everyone has their own opinion which way works, and sometimes none of the methods work. Im hoping its just a NAT issue and can fix it with some port forwarding. Here are a couple things to try;

1. When you get lag with one game for longer then 5-10min, try switching to another 360 game and see if the problem still occurs. This will rule out it being a game issue (like from a recent patch), and if it doesn't happen, will rule out it being a console issue.

2. Check the logs of the router at the time of the issue. For specifics please respond with your routers type/model number.

3. Try to play a private game with someone you know has a good connection, or even a few people. Since an internet issue with one player can effect all players on the map, its important to know if its your issue, or theirs. Don't want to be on a wild good chase.

I'm currently once again experiencing lag. As noted in the original posting of this problem, the router isn't the problem. I have once again played with the router both included in my network AND not included. I tried this again just prior to this updated post. I wired my Xbox directly to my modem. Just to answer your question about the router, it is a D-Link 865L. I've tried messing with all the settings for best results including port forwarding for Xbox live and call of duty. UPnp is enabled. I've tried QoS enabled with dedicated priority band width for the Xbox on a dedicated IP. It all makes no difference. Xbox status always shows an open NAT during tests. Different games haven't made any difference since they all exhibit the same lag issues. I have to wonder about the dynamic IP addresses issued by my ISP and if that may play a part.

Ok, that rules ALOT of router settings out. Darn :-( I like helping configure Dlink routers. I am very familar with them.

Ok, that rules out the game. And thats not as absurd as it sounds. The UPnP client gets updated alot when ever the game designers change the layout of the implementation of multiplayer. There was a infamous bug with NAT issues and MW3.

No, I don't see how it could cause the problems you are describing. A DHCP just has to do with the assigning of the IP, not the use of the IP. Think of it like a license, where one lasts your entire life(static), and the other has to  be renewed every 5 years(DHCP). What kind of license you have has nothing to do with how fast or well you drive. The worst a DHCP issue would cause is intermident disconnects where you entire network went down. It wouldn't cause lag, and it would only happen every 24hr at most.

Not to say the issue isn't a Cox issue. Lets look at that more closely. What are your modems signal levels? You can find them at 192.168.100.1. Also, try Visualware and Pingtest and that will give us some more data. Try to copy or some how post the results. I can supply specifics if required.

Also, you might try this with your Xbox. Its unusual that a latency issue wouldn't cause problems on the PC like streaming movies or other real time things. Can you try any free to play FPS on your PC? See if you get lag there? If not, then that would isolate it to the Xbox or XBL.

PS. If you want a free game to test with, try out Warframe? So much more ninja than any console game. Come to the light side...
