FTP to my NAS from outside my home
I used to be able to FTP into my NAS from outside my home with my previous provider. For some reason I cant get it to work with Cox. I am using the all-in-one Cox modem/router. Is it even possible for me to do what I want?

If you even know what FTP and NAS are, probably shouldn't be using a crappy gateway. Modem and seperate router FTW.
With that said, what model do you have? And are you only using the gateway or have another router attached?

Lol! Thats true. I'm not home now but its a CISCO unit and my NAS is Netgear. I do prefer the 2 separate but at the time of install I didn't have a router. I came from Uverse and used their all-in-one which let me FTP in from outside. I was going to get a router and have the all-in-one (dont know whats it called Lol) taken out. I'm just unsure if I can FTP. I've read a few things on the net that said Cox blocks a lot of ports for residential accounts. Is it even possible to FTP? Thanks for replying by the way.

FTP(port 21) itself is not blocked at the ISP level. See here.
But you have to open/forward the port inside the gateway. Assuming you have a Cisco DPC3825 see page 70-71 of manual. To log in see page 26-27. Basically 192.168.0.1 and leave user/password blank and click login.
Don't forget to set a DHCP reservation (Page 31-32) for your NAS unless your using static IP. And then if so, make sure to use a static IP outside the DHCP range of the gateway. I think its 192.168.0.10-100 but not sure. You can adjust it too.
This is all assuming Cox hasn't loaded some custom firmware onto the device that makes these instructions moot.

I'm just not knowledgeable enough when it comes to this stuff. The gateway is Cisco DPQ3925C DOCSIS 3.0 2-PORT Voice Gateway. There is port filtering, port range forwarding and port range triggering. Not sure of the difference. I used to come in on port 29000 and forward it to 192.168.1.112 which is my NAS. Thats it.
Here are some screen shots of my options. Ports are blank right now.

Well your in the right place. Why are you using a private port? FTP is default by 21, so you must be doing something specail. Either way, what ever port you want to forward, make that the start and end port for both internal and external. Then make the IP 192.168.1.112 just make sure your NAS is set to that as static. Also don't forget to check "enable" and "apply". Then go to whatismyip.com from a browser on a computer on the network and that will be the IP you access.

I dont know. I've always been told to stay away from port 21. :)
So I would put 21 in all the port boxes?

Sorry, I don't think I will be able to help anymore. It's in the manual, and I have no way of knowing how your NAS is set up. Did someone help you set it up the first time? If so, I would contact that person. If anyone else in this forum would like to try to help, they are welcome.

I understand. Thanks for all your help. I have a feeling its the gateway. The friend that helped originally gave it a shot with no luck. We are all stumped.
I gave you a bunch of kudos. :)
Thanks again!

Now I feel bad. I could probably figure it out if I had some way in, like remote access or Teamviewer, but that brings up privacy concerns. If your comfortable, we can discuss it in more details, but if not I totally understand.

I'd just be tempted to set up a Dyn IP account and set up a server software on the home connection. On Macs we can use Wired, or KDX or any FTP server software they make for macs, I'm not sure what offers are out there for windoze boxes. Open a custom port on the server side, that will add security. Never hurts. Also, PogoPlug boxes are pretty darn cheap, if you don't need to do a whole lot you might look at just hooking up your Nas to one of those, my brother did and he knows next to nothing about this stuff but he was able to use it very effectively. Really, even if you're using an all in one you shouldn't have any issue because of the gateway, it's just a router built on top of the modem, long as you can open ports you're fine.

Please don't feel bad! My friend that tried getting it to work for me works in the MIS/networking field and he couldn't figure it out.
Going to contact Cox and try to get just a modem and use my own router and see what happens.
I will update this thread when/if I resolve the issue.
Thanks AGAIN for your help.

Yeah I really don't understand why it wont work. It worked with Uverse and I had the same gateway type modem/router. It took 1 minuted to set up and get working.
Going to try just a modem and my own router.
Thanks!

Hey all! I have an update! Success!!
I ended up adjusting the settingss in the gateway and NAS to what they should be. The settings I was using all along. I rebooted my computer, NAS and gateway and magically port 29000 opened! Needless to say FTP is working. It was driving me crazy.
Thanks again!
