Firmware update for a Netgear C3700 Cable Modem Router???

I would like to find out when Cox will have firmware V1.01.11 for C3700. The firmware has been out since May, it is problematic to talk to support about firmware update, most of the customer support do not know what we are talking about. According to the Netgear site, V1.01.11 is available to ISP http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/25477/~/current-firmware-version-for-netgear-cable-modem-routers We are experiencing connection issue with the modem router often, Cox recently came out to fix noise issue in the line but we are still experiencing connection issue. Please advise. Thank you.

I haven't heard any news of a new firmware being in testing for that modem.  What sorts of problems are you experiencing?

Connection issues, connections drop randomly. We have an extender in the house which helps some but still experiencing problem. Have to restart router about once a week.

From this end I'm not seeing any indication of a connection problem between us and the device.  As for firmware, we don't appear to have any firmwares at all for that modem.  Do wired connections also experience problems?

Anything in the logs from around the times the problems happen? See page 71 of manual on how to check logs.

When the connection dies, does it only effect wireless, or wired too? Can you still see the network, but just not connect? Connect, but can't get online? Etc.

Also, how do you have the extender configured? Wonder if both devices have the same SSID but on different channels and so they are fighting. Just a guess though. Need more info.

I assume the wired part still work, the cable modem router is upstairs, other devices are plugged into the lan port, not computer. We'll look at the logs. The extender creates different SSID, for instance SSID_EXT

Hi Chris,

I have been taking advantage of the very useful Parental Control software that comes with my Netgear c3700 cable modem router for almost a year since I got it.  It just recently stopped working after Netgear updated their parental controls  .. .and according to Netgear it is dependent upon the most recent firmware update V1.01.11.  This firmware was released back in May and Cox has yet to adopt it, while most other ISP have already adopted it.

In speaking with Netgear, the only way to fix my parental controls is to upgrade the firmware and they say that can only be done by my ISP (Cox).  In speaking to Cox support, they don't seem to have any plans to adopt the new firmware.  How can this be after nearly 4 months they have not tested nor adopted the newer firmware for a device they claim is on on their supported routers list?

Who at Cox can we speak to about getting this new firmware adopted ASAP?

I tried looking from this end however it appears the currently installed firmware version is the only version that we have approved for that device on our network.  I'll pass your request along to our engineering team.  As a workaround you might be able to make use of the parental control feature of the McAfee security software that is included with your services.

Prime example of why I (and others) on this board recommend separate modems and routers.  Even if you had a Cox modem, if you had your own Netgear router you could update the firmware as needed.  You don't have to wait on Cox to bless it ... if they ever do.

Thanks for your reply.  As an FYI, the McAfee security software is really not a practical solution these days. I need a tool that protects any device, phone, iPad, pc, Wii, etc by monitoring my network not something that gets installed on the device. I think the McAfee tool is only for computers(pc or Mac). Kids theses days rarely spend time on computers at home.  They are on their mobile devices (primarily smartphones).

That's why my Open DNS tool I used to use with my Netgear router was so much more effective.  It wasn't device dependent, it allowed me to set time limits and levels of protection. So bummed that Cox is so slow to adopt, thus causing me to attempt to use and adapt inferior tools.

Same here, we didn't realize firmware is pushed down by ISP until we bought it.

Are you talking about the Parental Control tools from OpenDNS?  If so, they can be used with any router / gateway.  All you need to do is set them up on the OpenDNS site & set your DNS servers to OpenDNS, not Cox ... that is unless Cox has disabled changing DNS in their gateway.  That will protect any device on the network from blocked sites ... but ... won't protect a smartphone on a carrier's 4G network.
