I am having a problem where email I am trying to send gets sent back right away. The error I was getting yesterday was:
554 You are not allowed to connect.
However, today I do not get that error message, the email is just sent back. It is happening on Postmaster@cox.net and two addresses on carbinestudios.com.
After calling Cox Technical Support a few times they had no clue and wanted to charge me to have advanced support help fix it. I am not sure why I should pay for this when it seems like something on their end.
I have tried a different computer with a different email program to make sure and get the same error. However, when I use the web based email I have no problems with the email getting returned. So, it seems like something going up to them is getting messed up but since it occurs on 2 different computers using different email programs I am not sure how it could be my computers.
This is a little frustrating

If webmail is working without problems we need to take a closer look at your email client setup. Which email client are you using and are you using a Cox Internet connection when sending email?

Well, the thing is both computers do it and one uses Mozilla Thunderbird and the other Windows Live Mail. Besides, if it was the client setup it would have been failing when I set them up years ago. It just started.
Yes, I am using a Cox internet connection when sending the email. It is the only connection I have.

Could you post the full text of the bounce back message you're receiving?

The original error I got was (name removed in email):
-----------------
554 You are not allowed to connect.
<xxxxx@carbinestudios.com>
Please reply to <Postmaster@cox.net>
if you feel this message to be in error.
-----------------
The next day through today, all I get is:
-----------------
<postmaster@cox.net>
Please reply to <Postmaster@cox.net>
if you feel this message to be in error.
-----------------
Not a lot of information. Again, same problem on both computers with 2 different email programs which have worked for years.

The 554 error usually indicates an email server that is being blocked from sending email due to some configuration issues. Can you describe what seeings you're using for your email clients?

I assume you mean settings? If so, here they are:
General
Mail account box filled in
Name filled in
Email address filled in
Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing checked
Servers
Incoming mail: pop.west.cox.net (tried pop.cox.net as well after this problem)
Outgoing mail: smtp.west.cox.net (tried smtp.cox.net as well after this problem)
Log on using clear text authentication selected
Security
Algorithm 3DES selected
Advanced
SMTP port 25
POP3 port 110
Server timeout 1 minute
These are the same setting I have used for years. The problem only is seen on 3 email addresses so far. The postmaster@cox.net and 2 emails at *@carbinestudios.com. The rest are working fine.

pop.cox.net and smtp.cox.net are the correct server settings. It might also be worth trying the secure settings in this article:

When I use the settings in that doc I get:
The message could not be sent because the server rejected the sender's email address. The sender's email address was 'xxxx@cox.net'.
Subject 'Test'
Server Error: 550
Server Response: 550 5.1.0 Authentication required.
Server: 'smtp.cox.net'
Windows Live Mail Error ID: 0x800CCC78
Protocol: SMTP
Port: 465
Secure(SSL): Yes
I have the box checked about requiring SSL.

I tried again with 465 as I didn't have the"My server requires authentication" boxed check on the server tab. It now works with 465 but the email is still rejected when going to Postmaster@cox.net.

It's happening with e-mails sent to yahoo.com today, also. I am in Las Vegas. With COX its something new everyday. Not sure who to change to for better service ? They never give any credit off on our bill !!
