DVR fast forwarding speeds

Hi, I just swapped out my old DVR box for a new one, and the new one's slowest fast forwarding and rewind speeds are 4x faster than the old one.  The slowest fast forward speed on my old box was double time, I think, but it was helpful because I could fast forward through a commercial and stop it right when the commercial ended.  Now, when I press fast forward, it goes so fast that when I see my show back on and hit "play", I'm already about 15 seconds into the show.  So then I have to rewind which is also faster than before and takes me back into the commercials.  So I'm stuck having to watch a commercial if I want to see the start of when the show comes back on.   This is very annoying and I don't understand why COX would allow this feature to be taken away.  I called Technical Support to see if this can be adjusted, and of course it cannot be.  I just wanted someone at COX to know that I'm very disappointed that the new DVR boxes don't have the same fast forward and rewind speeds as the old boxes.

Hi There!

Thanks for reaching out to us through the Cox Forums. I'm sorry that your experience with the new DVR has been so frustrating! There are a couple of things that come to mind that may help the issue with fast forwarding through the commercials. First off, do you have a silver Cox remote or a black remote? Also, when you press the fast forward button on the remote, how many arrows are displayed on the TV in the lower right-hand corner?

Hi Becky,
I have both remotes- the silver and the black. I've tried it on both, and they both result in the same extra fast speed for rewinding and fast-forwarding. I just checked how many arrows are shown, and 2 are shown. Is there a way to slow it down to just one arrow? When I called the Technical Support last night, they said No.  Thank you for your help!

I just realized that one arrow means the speed of normal play.  Even though the fast-forwarding just has two arrows (if you hit the button just once), the speed is still about 4 times faster than the two-arrow speed on my old DVR box.  The old DVR box even had a function that when you stop fast-forwarding, it automatically goes back about 5 seconds, so that you don't miss any of your show.  The new box does not have the function- you just have to try to stop the fast-forward as fast as possible when you see your show back on, but even then, it's still about 15 seconds or more into your show, so you have to rewind, which is also very fast on the new box, so it takes you back into the commercials.  This is so annoying.  Did COX get a good deal on these new, lower quality DVR boxes or something??

Take a look at the remotes on http://bit.ly/CoxRemotes. Are you using the black 8820 or the silver 7820? While it shouldn't make a difference, it might help me figure out what is happening. Also, try this test. When you want to Fast Forward, first press PAUSE, and the press FFWD. This should set the Fast Forward speed at a slower rate.

Becky, I have BOTH of those remotes: the black 8820 AND the silver 7820.  I mainly use the silver one because I like it better and don't need my reading glasses to use it.  (With the black one, the buttons are too close together that it makes it hard to use, and the words are tiny.)   When I encountered this fast-forwarding and rewind issue with the new DVR box, I tried both remotes, and they both result in the same extra fast speed, so it is not the remote that's causing this problem- it is the new DVR box that I was given yesterday.  Plus, when I had my old DVR box, the fast-forwarding and rewind speeds were good with both remotes.

I tried your experiment- I hit Pause and then FFWD, but all that does is play it in slow motion, which defeats the purpose of "fast" forward.  If I'm trying to fast forward through the commercials, watching them in slow motion is worse than just watching them in regular play speed.  Do you know what I mean?

I have researched this extensively, and it appears customers at Comcast are having the same issue- the cable companies are switching to this new Cisco DVR box that has an extra fast fast-forward and rewind speed and does not have the 5 second backtrack like the old boxes had, and they are experiencing the exact same issue I am- where it goes TOO fast, and then you have to rewind, but then it rewinds TOO fast, so you end up having to watch the commercials anyway.

Doesn't COX want to be better than Comcast?  Why would you switch to a new DVR box that doesn't have the same great feature as the old box?  I spoke with two of my friends yesterday that are with Cox and have the same exact issue with the fast-forwarding and rewind speeds of the new boxes.  Hitting pause and then FFWD only plays the program in slow motion, so that is no help when trying fast forward through the commercial.  You certainly don't want to watch a commercial in slow motion.

This is not just an issue of not wanting to watch the commercials.  If I'm watching a sporting event that I've DVR'd and want to watch it more quickly, I used to be able to fast-forward with my old DVR box and watch it, but at a faster speed.  With the NEW box and its extra fast FFWD, it's TOO fast that it skips ahead- you can't watch like that- it's not a continuous stream but at a faster speed like the old box used to do.  I really hate the new box.

Is there a way to slow down the fast-forward speed so that it's still faster than regular play mode, but not SO fast that I have the issues that I'm currently experiencing??  (Again, hitting PAUSE and then FFWD only plays the show in very slow motion, defeating the purpose of fast forward.)
