Dropped Internet connection when using router

I'm helping my in-laws install a Linksys WRT54G router. They have the Motorola SBV5222 modem. When I first plugged in the router, it would not receive an IP from the modem but that was solved by rebooting it. Everything was working just fine for about 40 min, I even downloaded a batch of Windows updates for their PC's. Then the Internet connection dropped. I checked the router status page and it still showed an IP assigned to it. After reseting everything, we had a connection for about 30 min but then it dropped again. If I connect just one PC to the cable modem, everything works fine.

I'm not familiar with the SBV5222 model...is there something I need to know about its settings?

Thanks in advance.

The modem has no settings to adjust.  Most likely I would say this is an issue with the router if the connection works without it.  Is this the only router you have to work with?  Most G routers are end of life at this point and showing their age.

Thanks for the reply.  Good point.  We installed a new D-Link Wireless N router and everything is working just fine.  The Linksys model I initially connected was several years old.

Honestly, it sounds like the router -- have you tried update its firmware yet?

Note I am NOT a Cox rep, but I am an IT geek. :-)

When you hooked up the Linksys WRT54g router, did you call tech support and give them all the information found on the bottom of the router? If you did not the system will not recognize your router. They have to make adjustments on their end to accommodate a Linksys router.
