Download speed slow

Hello, I am currently paying for the ultimate internet package but consistently only got 50 mbps when I run the speed check. I have an Arris docsis 3.0 modem and an ASUS RT-AC87U router and the test is being run using wifi. Is this typical? Using the exact setup a few months ago I would at least get over 100 mbps but considering the advertising states "up to 300 mbps download" I'm a little confused with the discrepancy. My upload speed is usually between 20 and 30 mbps

For starters, I'd suggest trying to test with a wired connection direct to the modem without the router attached and see what you get that way. This will help you determine if the problem is the Internet speed or something else.

Thank you for your reply. Yes, I connected my laptop directly to the router and I am getting the same speeds, so I would assume then it would be the internet speed. I'm also doing the test at different times of the day to account for heavy usage if that's a variable and it still neve goes over 50-60 mbps download speed

Plugging directly into the router is actually not the same as plugging directly into the modem. Plugging into the router still utilizes NAT and therefore the router's CPU/RAM which is ideally what we'd like to bypass for testing purposes.

Ok, did what you said, plugged directly into the modem, and this time it was around 60. Incidentally, also running next over wifi gave me the same 60 mbps, so I would assume now this rules out my router...

Hi, please restart your modem after you plug directly into the modem. Do you receive the same results?

I'm not seeing a new device connected on this end. Are you sure you're plugged into the modem and not the router?

yes, I used my macbook pro laptop with the ethernet cord attached to an adapter to my computer and the ethernet cord attached directly to the modem. With that connection, the download speed increased to 187 Mbps

Do you have it connected now? The modem still says an Asus device is attached and there is no history of a connection to an Apple device.

Ok, I am currently connected with my MacBook pro directly to the modem. I will leave it like this for a few hours. Current download speed using this connection is 112 mbps.

Yes I'm seeing a change now, thanks. I've also fixed a few problems that became evident from this end as well. Let me know if you're seeing any improvement.
