Download speed consistently slower than upload speed

I have been getting download speeds about two thirds of my upload speeds recently.

I thought it might be due to an old out of date modem i had, so I updated the modem to the new-ish motorola SBG6782.

Resulting in the same download slower than upload ( as measured on coxs speed test and others ).

Some forum surfing showed that there may be a "service code" that needs to be set from somebody from cox when a modem gets changed?

Also, coxs initial web intercept / new modem registration screen doesn't recognize the SBG6782 even though it is on the compatible modems list. ( I used my correct serial and hfc mac numbers, but had to tell the system it was a SB6141 to get connectivity.

Any mods able to do a line check, or send one of these codes down the line?

The config file problem effected those who had premier with a D2 modem and upgraded to a D3 modem. Do you have premier? Did you have a D2 modem before the SBG6782?

The SBG6782 is a gateway. Are you replacing a gateway or was your old modem a stand alone (like a SB6141). If you also have a router then a SBG6782 won't work unless you configure it in a specail way, so its probably easier(and better) if you just use a normal modem.

What are you signal levels? You should be able to find them at http://192.168.0.1 and then Status > Connection. For more info see page 19-20 of this manual.

Hmm. The service code issue doesn't apply here, the way the modem is named in the system is sort of more an appearance issue than a functional one, and you have the correct firmware (I think there's been at least one update already since those came out, new as they are).
Signal levels look alright, they're fluctuating a bit over time but not alarmingly, and I show 0 packet loss to the modem.
As gateways go, the SBG6782 is pretty nice, but our first question always has to be whether you're running the speed test on a wireless or a wired connection.

It is a wired connection, ethernet, not usb.

The problem seems to be aggravated by distance, the further away a server is the worse it gets, nearby servers - not so much

IP #s manually x'd out.

other speed test sites are similar, distant servers having download 2/3rds to 3/4ths the upload speeds (sometimes very fast uploads around 24mbps)

I might be able to copy/paste some signal strength info the modems status screen can display if that would help?

Yes, signal levels from the modem would help.

Latency looks high. Try this test? If latency is high overall I will reply with commands to trace.

Signal levels look good. Upstream is kind of high, but I don't think that's actually causing your issue.

Wonder if the router part of the gateway is slowing something down. Or it could be a PC issue. Do you have another computer to try with? What were the speeds before you upgraded the modem and what other equipment were you using instead of the gateway. Basically looking for some context.

So, problem is not just going away.

I can get these kind of download speeds from my cell phone, an unlimited data plan at that.

Gonna see if I can tether through a router and direct compare coxs performance.

If all else fails it  might be worth arrange for a technician to come out and troubleshoot further.

Ok, today downloads are faster than uploads.

Except everything is now as slow as dial up levels !

I'm getting sub mbps on nearly all coxs own speed test servers.

I'm wondering how long this level of failure is going to continue.

Got more reasonable results this week, even though I didn't change anything.

Therefore, something must have changed on coxs end.

Looks like yesterdays more normal numbers may have been a fluke.

Today the modem reported it had connectivity to cox but no internet was getting through, even to cox.net.

I had to reboot the modem manually, the got the old downloads slower than uploads on coxs speed tests.

regarding the cox mods hints of scheduling a tech to come out:  It is highly unlikely that I will ever be able to prearrange a date between x o'clock and y o'clock on any day other than on a weekend.
