DIY: How to automatically restore a lost cable modem internet connection.

"After many visits, the cable company technician gave me his cell phone number as he left my house and said to call if anything changed.  My problem with intermittent loss of internet connectivity (termed "Modem Flap" in the industry) could not be solved.  I was trekking to a downstairs closet to manually power-cycle my cable modem once or twice daily and the process was getting old."

This is the lead paragraph of an article I co-authored in MagPi. Feb, 2014, Issue 20.  In it we describe using a RaspberryPi micro computer to sense the loss of my internet connection and then re-connect to the cable plant automatically without human intervention.  The solution plays well here and may be useful elsewhere.

If this sounds familiar, check out http//:www.themagpi.com for our solution.

JDTinker,

If there is an issue with your service, we need to get to the bottom of it. You shouldn't need to continually power cycle your equipment, nor need to devise a device to do it for you. I was able to locate your account based on the email address you registered with.
Quite honestly, I'm not seeing any flaps on your modem, so I'm a bit perplexed. Exactly how often are you needing to power cycle the modem?

I  really don't believe it is spam.  What I tried to do was provide an honest, description of a DIY technical solution to a cable data problem.

I have log files of modem flaps and names with contact info. in our local Cox office.  If you would like to see this documentation, send me your contact info and I'll forward it to you.  Thanks for your interest and prompt reply to my post.

Oh interesting. I thought you were a spambot for the magazine. Its hard to tell sometimes they are getting so good.

Interesting device, but I agree that if a power cycle is needed more then once a week, there is some underlying problem. Like maybe hardware or electrical. If this works for you though, congrats. I wonder if you could program it to use DOCSdiag to pull signal levels from the modem at the same time.

Log files and a note sent, Becky.  As noted in my logs and message, the modem flap problem ceased within a month of the publication of my article in MagPi.

After an end-to-end investigation of the problem by your very capable technical staff here, the problem was localized to the cable plant.  Cisco's DOCSIS white papers indicate that RF noise entering the copper portion of the plant, random noise from ageing connectors, thermal sensitivity, excessive homes/node and high upstream usage are among the possible culprits.
