Digital Cable and Internet

I recently had to downgrade to save money. My main cable box was in the living room and I have two other tvs with just basic cable (cable wire straight into tv). So I turned in my cable box and cancelled my cable subscription but I kept my internet. Well when I got home, both of my tvs has a cable coming from the wall directly into the tv. I turned it on and noticed it still has basic cable. Is there anything I have to do on my end or should I wait for Cox to do something?

Call Cox and complain that those unwanted TV signals are polluting your premises, and demand that they install filters to keep them out (which they may get around to doing someday, regardless.)

Hi James_504,

We usually take customers out of billing for services when requested but don't schedule the technician to come out and trap the service for 30 days. Your technician will be out soon to get this taken care of.

I mean am I safe to assume that the internet and cable are on the same signal? I told the representative I wanted all of that cancelled when I turned my box in. These past two months I've only been charged for internet which is what I wanted.

As long as your internet still works, and your not being billed, I wouldn't worry about it. The disconnects are given lower priority, since most customers don't mind getting free stuff, and sometimes the technician will just not bother disconnecting you if it would take more effort then it's worth. Also, usually the filter they put on blocks some of the signal for internet (very small amount) so its actually preferable they don't install it. It will probably happen the next time a technician is in the area.

Is there something available as to where I can keep the basic cable and pay a monthly fee for it instead of having a cable box? I'm fine with what I have and I don't need a box. Things are simpler this way for me. The cable prices keep going up and I can't afford it.

Yea, there is a way. but I really wouldn't worry about it. This kind of thing happens alot. When I as in my old house, and moved, I called to cancel cable and it took them 3 years (and I called them 3 times) for them to shut it off. Turns out there was a tree that had grown over some of the telephone pole and none of the technicians wanted to deal with it. You having cable doesn't really cost them anything, and they are in fault, so I would enjoy the freebie if I were you. Think of it as a thank you for all the service your paid them for. :-)

Cox HSI exists at about 40MHz upstream, and 843MHz downstream. Analog (basic) channels are between  54MHz and 500MHz. Filtering is really no problem.

You would think so, and I am not exactly sure what causes it, but twice when a cable filter was added I noticed changes of about 1dbh on the downstream across the channels. It happened again recently when the filter was in my broom closet where I was able to disco/connect at my leisure.

Either way I don't think you should have to pay for service just because Cox didn't/forgot/could not disconnect you. Their fault, their dime. Maybe take the money you would have spent and spend it on a internet upgrade? Win/win.

1. Across WHAT channels?

2. The OP said he WASN'T being billed for TV service.

Seriously? Across the downstream channels. I assumed you knew what I was talking about. Either way its off topic, so forget it.

As for what the OP said, he mentioned later that he was considering paying for basic cable because thats what Cox has left on. My point was you shouldn't have to pay for someone elses mistake. Conversationally this is interesting, but technically its a no brainer. OP get free cable. Yeaaaa!

Well, what he actually said was "Is there something available as to where I can keep the basic cable and pay a monthly fee for it instead of having a cable box? I'm fine with what I have and I don't need a box." The answer is YES, and if he bought it he wouldn't have to worry about losing his channels when they get around to installing a filter.

James_504,

If you would like to subscribe to basic cable, we can reactivate that portion of the service on your account. This way, there is no chance that the tech will trap the service. Please email your complete address, the Cox pin or last 4 of your Social and the channels you wish to keep to cox.help@cox.com. Also please include a reference to this forum post.
