Data Plan
With the recent increase to my internet speed, thank you Cox, I have reached my allotted data limit over a week prior to the reset date. While I am extremely happy with my service I do not appreciate the data plan attached my account. When I initially signed up for service with Cox several years ago I was not told by the representative, who so eagerly accepted my money, that I would have such a plan and needed to track/limit my usage. I would upgrade further if it were an option, but I'm already an Ultimate Internet customer. As a consumer I am extremely disappointed.
At this time, in a majority of cases, there is no consequence for going over your data cap. However, if this policy is to change I'd like to extend Cox a warning. Before you begin adding service limitations like throttling, blocking access or charging users who are over their cap, please consider the class action suits brought against AT&T. Courts tend to look down on companies who exploit their monopoly of a particular service, though that doesn't seem to stop SDG&E, but I digress.
Needless to say, I am very upset about this plan, which was never brought to my attention until AFTER I exceeded it. Fellow Cox subscribers have agreed that such a plan is ridiculous and that they will gladly drop their service if this becomes an issue, as will I.
I suppose I wouldn't have such a big problem with the plans if they were somewhat reasonable. If I wasn't being limited to 1.2% of my total possible usage for the month. Yes you read that correctly. At 100mbps I can download at approximately 12.5 MB/s, that means that 12.5 MB/s*60s/m*60m/h*24h/d*30d/m is a maximum usage of 32,400,000 Megabytes or 32,400 Gigabytes.
Cox offers me 400 GB total for 1 month: 400/32,400*100 = 1.23%
How can you offer a service, charge an exorbitant amount for said service, but only let me use it 1.23% of the month? Unbelievable.

It's been 24 Hours, can anyone from Cox explain the thinking behind the data plans?

I also just received this notice and was unaware Cox had a data cap plan (Similar to cell phone companies). Don't believe I ever exceed mine before. Since I have done nothing different this past month then other months I can only assume this will happen again due to some changes Cox has made. Last few weeks Century Link has been digging up the yards around my neighborhood to upgrade their system. Might be time to look at DSL and I guess I will also see if I can find an independent data usage monitor. Don't believe Cox's data meter is the accurate

Nope checked all that. Nothing new happening on my end. Must be something with Cox. Afraid Cox is doing something to make it seem I am using more data than I am.

I don't see Cox as being my bandwidth provider, but my Internet Service Provider(ISP). That service is outlined in a form called the Terms of Service(ToS) which can be found here.
"You must comply with the current bandwidth, data storage, email limits and other requirements associated with the package of Service you selected. Information on speeds, usage and other features can be found at Speeds and Usage Information."
Your point about the cap being only a small percentage of the hypothetical limit is valid but one I consider inaccurate. Not only are there overheads on the cable side, but even with the protocol and hardware. My point is I believe Cox sells a service they intend for reasonable consumer level use. I would like to debate the amount Cox's considers that level to be, but I can't argue Cox's right to enforce it. How Cox enforces that cap is also light handed. It's really only monitored in areas where congestion is a issue, and even then the warnings, up to this point, is just that; warning. I have not heard of a single Cox customer losing service for going over Cap. Yet I have heard of customers from other ISP who have.
