Cox selling my number?

I just signed up with Cox and got my number two days ago. Ever since that day, I have been getting calls from people soliciting for money. They call me by my name so I know it's not someone just calling the person who used to have this number. It sounds to me as if cox is selling my phone number soon soon As I get the service. No one has this number--except for the solicitors. I am not happy. Has anyone else had this happen?

Hello,

Cox does not sell numbers. Cox is required, by law, to provide listing information to directory publishers for listings and for delivery of directories. Some telemarketers obtain new listing information from these publishers to make calls to. We encourage all customers to take advantage of the National Do Not Call Registry, which is free and easy to apply for. You can register online at https://donotcall.gov or by calling toll-free, 888-382-1222.

Thank you,

While I agree with you, Nichole, do sign up for the DNC, it's useless against these scammers.  The DNC keeps honest companies honest, but it does nothing for the likes of Rachael from Cardholder Services.  They blatantly disregard the DNC, make their annoying calls and, if caught, either close down and reopen in another office or treat the fine as a cost of doing business.  Anyway, the DNC is no help, you will still get calls offering to fix the computer errors being reported to "Microsoft".

FYI I did recently see a story where the FCC managed to track down one serial violator and hit them with a significant fine.  That being said, it does get results to report violations.

Not sure what case you are referring to, Chris.  Most of the FTC cases I have seen were specific fraud cases as a result of the telemarketing, not the violation of the DNC list.  Can you post a link to the store you referenced, thanks.

I know the FTC prosecuted and settled a case against Rachel in 2013 but I still get calls from "her" to this day.  As I said, settlement is a cost of doing business.  Here is a link to the FTC press release on the case against Rachel: https://www.ftc.gov/news-events/press-releases/2013/07/ftc-settles-rachel-robocall-enforcement-case

I think this may have been the link I was referring to.  Fair warning if you're offended by the language.  This is obviously not a Cox publication:
