Cox Security Suite Plus and Windows 10

Hi, I am upgrading to Windows 10 July 29th and wanted to confirm that Cox Security Suite Plus by McAfee works on Windows 10. Cox Security Suite Plus is excellent and having it included in my account makes my $67 monthly internet bill sting a little less :)

You really like the Cox branded Mcafee? I find the memory footprint to be horrible and detection rates to be under industry norm. Have you considered moving to a free (and better IMO) option like AVG, Avast, or Microsoft Security Essentials? With windows 10 specifically, Microsoft is trying to integrate anti-virus into the operating system. Because of that, Microsoft Security Essentials kind of has a "home turf" advantage. For more info see here.  I would also look into Malwarebytes, which is a good backup to run now and then for anything MSE might have missed.

Hi Health, thanks for replying. Microsoft Security Essentials became Defender with Windows 8.1 (which I have now) and 10 and is certainly an option. With regards to Defender, I do get the integrated home turf advantage. Defender just does not have all the additional features McAfee does and McAfee has a great user interface. Memory footprint is not an issue for me, plenty of power. How is Cox branded McAfee any different detection wise from non Cox branded McAfee? McAfee is universally rated among the top of antivirus products.

My mistake. I have used it on XP and Windows 7, and I thought they would have continued to support for later OS. Maybe now they are pushing Defender? I find Defender to be too intrusive for my taste, but then again I haven't used it since the early versions.

If you have "power" then you know you can never have too much "power".  As you can see in this diagram, Mcafee is the most bloated, and that is excluding memory release issues. Why waste memory running that shiney UI in the background when most hardly use it? To each their own though. Also, here is another good article on the shortcomings of Mcafee, but there are plenty more out there. I was not meaning to insult something you enjoy, but just wanted to make sure you were informed of other options. Alot of people just use the AV that comes on their PC, and don't know there are other options.

I disagree with this statement. Can you quote some sources? It is a "popular" product because it pays PC manufacturers to include its product in OEM, along with other bloatware. And yes, for some people it works, and some people may use it for years without problems, but that doesn't mean a different solution might not have also been worry free at better performance levels and free.

"Can you quote some sources?"  I can:

AV-Test labs provides independent comparative tests and reviews for antivirus software, antimalware tools, and security software for Windows, Mac, and Android. Using their most current report on 23 paid and free products for Windows 8.1 only 2 tested higher than McAfee. See here: http://www.av-test.org/en/antivirus/home-windows/windows-8/

I agree with your points Health that there are less bloated security products for sure. Also your right, you can never have too much power (especially on Asphalt 8: Airborne:). I guess it boils down to a balance between getting the best protection for the least impact on computer resources and there is always so much conflicting information out there. I appreciate your thoughts Health, has me looking deeper into what I should do.

I can confirm that it is not working with windows 10 as of yet. When I go to the page for cox home security suite, the button for "manage is missing so I can't download it. I can however download it on my windows 8.1 laptop, which I did and then transferred the installer and copied the key code over to my windows 10 pc. After launching the installer and inputting the key and clicking install it goes for a bit and then the installation fails.

I was wondering if anyone else is experiencing slow internet speed after installing windows 10. First I was having problems connecting to the internet. (still might be.) I use google chrome, it's super slow or locking up. I even changed my batteries in my mouse thinking it was disconnecting. I came to cox site to check speed I pay for upgraded speed. It says 60 down 9 up. That's bull. It's the slowest it's ever been.

I'm not getting into the AV discussion.

ibamusicman, I would suggest starting another thread with your concerns.  This is about Cox Security Suite & Windows 10.  Speed / lagging issues deserves it's own topic.  But, short answer, updated Wednesday and no speed issues so far.  Let's continue this discussion in it's own thread, maybe a mod can spin this off.

Hi, try restarting your equipment, modem, router, computer. Unplug the power cords and shut down (not a restart)  the computer. Turn the computer back on only and let it power up, see if there are any error messages (you wont be connected to internet at this point). If it powers up normally, shut it back down again so it is completely off. Plug in the power cord to the modem and let it restart, then the router, wait two minutes then turn the computer on and see if there are any errors on start up.

Let us know if this helps!

I had the same problem.  Called Cox rep and they said that the AV Cox Security Suite will not be compatible with Windows 10 until end of Aug or Sept.   Now what? Have to buy an AV program?  Not happy.  Would not have upgraded to 10 if I'd known that this was going to be an issue.  I also called Mcafee and they said that they are compatible with windows 10.  They said I have to call Cox re: the issue.

No.  Cox Security Suite Plus is not compatible with Windows 10 at this time.

Solar, as Health Edge said, there are FREE, that's free, AV programs available on the net.  AVG and Avast are two and very highly rated.  The latest version of Avast is Windows 10 compatible, it's running on the Windows 10 machine I'm using to type this response.  Avast was running on Windows 8.1 during the upgrade and still running on 10 without issue.  Check it out here: https://www.avast.com/index  They will try to step you up to a paid version but the basic version is free to download, free to use.

Hey @Solar, I am using windows 10 since launch and Cox security Suite is working fine. It is missing SiteAdvisor on the Edge browser that gives a rating on website link security but I notice no other differences.

However, in my case the Suite was already installed before I upgraded so it was maintained through the Windows 10 upgrade.

Hi Everyone,

I just found out that there is a known issue where the Cox Security Suite “Manage” button isn’t visible for Windows 10 when using the default Windows 10 internet browser. Our teams are working on a resolution, but there is no ETA at this time. If you have Firefox or Chrome installed on your PC, you can use the steps below to access the Cox Security Suite download page:

  1. Right click the browser application icon on the desktop.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click the Compatibility tab.
  4. Check Comparability Mode and select Windows 7 from the drop-down list.
  5. Click Apply and OK.
  6. Open the browser and follow steps standard steps to download Cox Security Suite via Internet Tools.

Note: This procedure will not work by right clicking the browser icon on the Start menu.

We'll let you know as soon as we get further updates!

Hi Becky,

I followed your instructions above and the manage button appeared.  But I still can't get the Security Suite installed.  I get the serial #, enter it, etc. and then it gets stuck in the "preparing' mode.  Finally get a message that it won't install for the following reason and says "0".Then prompts me to contact mcafee.  They tell me to contact Cox communications.  I've tried to install 3 different times without success.  Any more suggestions would be appreciated.
