Cox / Netgear CG3000D-RG issues: DDNS setup missing!

Netgear CG3000D-RG issues:  DDNS setup missing!
I and a Cox internet customer from Henderson NV and have spent hours on the phone with Cox tech support trying to find a simple answer.  I could never get through to anyone who even knows what Dynamic DNS is.
Several years ago, I purchased a Netgear CG3000D-RG modem/router direct from Cox truck at installation time.
Now, I need to implement DDNS so I can reliably remotely access my security / HVAC system after an IP address change.
I do have a working DDNS service already setup with dyndns.org.
I found that the identical router as supplied by Netgear supports DDNS and the factory manual clearly shows a DDNS setup function on the advanced menu.
However, the router Cox sold me does not have the DDNS menu item listed.   It is either not in the firmware or it has somehow been disabled.
My Questions:
  • Can Cox remotely enable the DDNS function?
  • Or, Can I get new firmware that does?  (I have heard that Cox can push new firmware to the modem)
  • Or, is there a way that Cox can implement the DDNS direct to my dyndns.org account as an alternative"
  • Why would Cox disable this essential feature?
I know I can purchaser new hardware, but an extra expense when a simple solution should work.
I hope someone can help.
regards
Bill

My Questions:
  • Can Cox remotely enable the DDNS function?

They could, but they won't. To enable it on yours, they would have to enable it on all devices. Not sure if the function was removed via firmware or config file, but both are universal to the service and hardware.

  • Or, Can I get new firmware that does?  (I have heard that Cox can push new firmware to the modem)

Not that I know of. Cox takes the firmware from Netgear and modifies it to their network. They may have a new or old firmware, but it is unlikely that they would add a feature back in that they went through the trouble of removing in the first place. It is possible a old firmware might have it, if it is from before they removed the feature, but there are no release notes, so it would be trial and error. More error then trial IMO since not even sure if the feature is controlled via firmware. One thing you might do is disconnect the coaxial from the gateway and do a factory reset. If you still don't have the feature, then it must be firmware.

  • Or, is there a way that Cox can implement the DDNS direct to my dyndns.org account as an alternative"

Can you explain? DDNS is not something that can be done on the ISP side. You need a client to use DDNS, something to update the domain tracker with the new DHCP IP.

  • Why would Cox disable this essential feature?

Gateways are designed for users who want a plug and play experiance. Because they are somewhat responsible for support of the device, they disable any feature they don't think the majority of their users would use to ease the support process. I would suggest getting a stand alone modem and your own router.

The other option is running an update client on a system within your network ... see DynDNS clients here.  There are clients for Windows, Mac and Linux
