Cox Internet speeds increasing?
I got an e-mail this morning from Cox stating that my internet speeds would be increasing "up to 100mbps". I understand that the 100mbps is probably an "ultimate" package, but I just wanted to say thank you and let Cox know that we are appreciative of the speed upgrades across the network. A representative on the phone told me that my service was going to be upgraded from 3mbps to 5mbps due to the upgrade. Glad to see that Cox is keeping their system in a position to offer top tier services. Would it be possible to find out a little more info regarding the change and why it's happening? (i.e., is there new fiber in OKC that is allowing this, or is it a simple update to the pricing schedule?) Either way, thank you!

Yes, our nationwide speed upgrade has finally made it to OKC, and those numbers for OKC are all correct. Essential goes to 1m up/5m down; Preferred to 5m/25m, Premier-D2 to 3m/25m, Premier-D3 to 10m/50m, and Ultimate to 20m/100m.
Premier customers with a DOCSIS 2.0 modem are strongly encouraged to get a DOCSIS 3.0 modem, and those with Cox-provided phone/internet modems (EMTAs) can have them exchanged at no charge.
As always, I'm not supposed to give a specific date, but it's within the next month or so.

You do know that 100meg isn't top tier service, right? 1,000 meg service is rolling out across the country.

Says who/where? Are you talking about Cox? You would have to employ DOCSIS 3.1 to get anywhere near to those speeds. Besides, it doesn't matter what the last mile is if your ISP doesn't keep their peering and bandwidth agreements completive. Its like getting the speed limit on your street raised to 100MPH.

Yes, I know that some services (i.e. Google fiber which is in only three cities, and FiOS which is no longer being developed with Verizon's focus on its cellular network) do offer speeds in the 1,000mbps range. I wish that cable companies and other providers had more incentive to offer better services at prices that were affordable, but sadly that isn't the case and we do not have enough competition, especially in OKC. Maybe some day we will have access to that kind of speed. But for now, I am happy that Cox is expanding its network and giving me a speed upgrade. I honestly can't afford anything more than their "essential package" but can be grateful nonetheless.
See http://highspeedgeek.com/america-gigabit-internet/ for cities with gigabit internet services.

I received the same email, and a subscriber to the Ultimate package. My emails states....In the spirit of providing you the best service possible, we'll be upgrading your Cox High Speed Internet so it's faster than ever before – With top speeds up to 100 Mbps! In just a few short weeks, this automatic speed increase will power all of your devices so you can stream HD videos, download music, upload photos and more…even faster.
would it be possible to confirm when this will actually happen and what the upload speed will be?

Wizard, the representative that I spoke with on the phone didn't give me a timeline (though I didn't ask), but this is my understanding:

Thanks for the info, KipK! Is it possible for you to give us detail about why the changes were made (i.e. due to improved infrastructure like fiber in OKC, or simply a change in the offerings by Cox). Just wanting to know if Cox is keeping itself in a position that say, 5-10 years down the road (or hopefully less) they could offer fiber to the home.

The infrastructure improvements to support it have been going on for as long as I've been here. The last-mile, really the last-few-miles, of our hybrid-fiber-coaxial network got a major overhaul about ~5 years ago (at least around my area, I wasn't privy to a lot of national info until fairly recently ), and we're finishing up headend upgrades this year.
As far as the reasoning behind it, I couldn't really comment. I just know that it's a nationwide effort to increase/optimize bandwidth and make our speed tiers consistent (except for Ultimate, which, for the moment, will be 150mbps down in some areas and 100mbps in others (and no, I don't know why )).

How do I know if I have Premier-D2 or Premier-D3? My bill and my account pages just say Premier. I am in OKC.
