Cox Gigablast using an Apple Airport Extreme wireless modem

I recently had Cox Gigablast internet service installed. Instead of the netgear wireless router supplied by Cox, I elected to continue using my existing router (at least for the near future) which is an Apple Airport Extreme.

While the new service is extremely fast, it sometimes slows down. I was wondering if there might be some settings that need to be used when having an Airport Extreme router used in this application. Has anyone has any experience with this?

Also, as I have a wireless coverage problem in my house, can anyone recommend a wireless router that has an extended range?

Hello,

There are no settings you would need to change for the speeds to work in the router, as long as it can handle the Gigabit speeds.  You may also want to check the specifications of the wireless device(s) you are using.  is it just issues with the wireless connection?  Do you get the same slower speeds using an ethernet connection?  We can look into this for you, please send an email with your account information to cox.help@cox.com.

The most powerful wireless I have found is the Netgear Nighthawk line.  The R7000's WiFi out-performs any router I have had.

Do you have the new Airport Extreme tower, which operates with three-stream 802.11ac technology? If so, you're good to go except my installer says the farther you are away from the Airport, the slower your speed will be. He suggested putting a second router in, hard-wired, in the farther reaches of the house to ensure reliable speeds. I also second the poster that asked which devices you're using. Some older devices may not be able to take advantage of the gigabit speed.

How do you have the router configured now and how do you have it hooked up? Are you also using the router they gave you?

It might be possible to use one as the main router then put the other router somewhere else in the house and run a Ethernet to it and set it up as a access point. You might want to use the Airport as the AP, since Airports have some compatibility issues with Cox, specially  with IPv6.

Get rid of the Apple Airport...I had a Time Capsule 3TB with an Extreme as a Booster....They do not play well in the sandbox!

I went with all Netgear, 1900AC as router, and an EX7000 as a booster, I even added a Netgear NAS drive....much better!

I have all Macs at home (5), work extremely well! I'm getting Gigablast installed today! My 300Msp service is usually 200-250 on the download and 30-45 on Upload. With the Airport and Time Capsule, I was lucky to get 50-60 on the down and 11 on the up.
