Correct Modem
currently using Motorola SB5101 with preferred cox. is this the correct Modem to be using? i have a apple router and using to i pads and apple tv. when using the 1st generation i pad i get disconnected a lot would a different modem help?.

For Preferred service a DOCSIS 3.0 is now the minimum equipment requirement. Although it's a 50Mbps service customers grandfathered in with legacy 2.0 modems are only provisioned for 25Mbps due to limitations of said devices.

No, your modem is an older DOCSIS 2 modem ... unless you have basic service. As Chris said, DOCSIS 3 is now the standard and is the minimum required for Preferred or higher service. If you rent the modem from Cox, they should upgrade it for free. If you own the modem you will have to purchase a DOCSIS 3 unit.
