Connection Issues: IP Conflicts
For the past two days I've been having IP conflicts, the primary computer is hardwired and the secondary is WI-FI. It seems the secondary computer is the cause. We have done all the things of resetting, renewing, etc. for typical ip conflict issues. When the secondary computer is turned off, we are able to connect to internet and use the WI-FI too. Any suggestions. (BTW, we've had over a year of non issues with both computers, ipads, TV's and cell phones using WI-FI.)

Are the two computers getting the same ip causing the conflict? Or is the second computer conflicting with another device on your network?
First question is what has changed??? Did you add another router or WiFi extender to your network? If you have multiple routers only one can be a DHCP server. That function must be turned off on all other routers or it can generate conflicts. Does either device have a static ip assigned. If so and the ip is in the DHCP range that can cause conflicts too.
If you need more help, please post more details, your network config, router model number and OS of computers in question. Thanks

The two computers are getting the same IP Conflict. Nothing has changed but I need to check later if either computer has a static address. There is only one router and no Wi-Fi extenders being used. The basic configuration in my house has been the same for over a year. This occurrence as a said only started two days ago. So basically I just have my main computer with modem connected to it and the wireless router which transmits to the secondary computer and the associated phones, ipads, xbox and smart TV. Both computers are running windows 7.

Sounds like you might either have a DHCP problem, but more likely a bad network adapter. Have you tried to replace the network card in the computer to see if that fixes the problem, if in fact nothing has been changed and it just happened out of the blue one day, I suspect the network card is gone defective.

@Joe P, not sure I understand, is the modem connected to both the wired computer and the router? Only one device, the router, should be connected directly to the modem. Normal connections:
cable -> modem -> router --|--> wired computers
|--> WiFi devices
Please confirm only the router is connected to the modem, thanks.

Router- Model: WNDR4500
Modem- Model:SB6120
Another issue is that when the computer in issue connects to the internet through the router it will stay up for about 2 minutes and then it will take the internet down for almost all devices. I have tried updating the firmware to no avail and dropping and renewing the IP to the other computer, but I am still having the same problem. Thank you for the help.

Joe, if this is too basic please let me know .... What is the IP address of each of the machines in question and the router?
from Win7, open a cmd window (start/run/cmd) and type ipconfig -all and enter.
Router: content of the Advanced/Setup/LAN Setup screen. A screenshot would help.

I don't suppose you have a spare usb type wireless network adapter sitting arount if so just disable the first one and install replacement to quickly see if it sloves problem. Much faster and easire than ggetting into all the config settings and screenshots but hey it'syour time. GL with the fix.

This is a old thread. You probably want to start a new thread and give the details of your network and problem.
