I just bought a CG3000DV2 modem with the Premier package. My problem is the lag on Xbox Live. On Nba 2k14 I can barely make an online connection to play someone and I almost never finish a game. When I am connected wirelessly it will play smoothly until about 3 minutes in then the game will lag out. If i am connected through the ethernet port it is even worse and I will consistently lag throughout the game.
When i play other games like titanfall it is not as bad like but it will lag here and there. But with the speeds of premier package shouldnt lag be minimal?
My question is if I upgrade to the CG4500 would this possibly fix this issue? Does anybody know of a fix?

The CG4500 is a step above the CG3000 in both quality and performance, but in my opinion, if your looking for optimal performance, your better off with a separate modem and router. I could give suggestions if you would like, just need to know a bit more about what you need and what price range your looking to stay within.
I did find something out specific to NBA 2K14. Seems the issue with lag are the game servers themselves, and how they juggle the matchmaking. There is a IGN article here. and here is one more recent. So I think that issue won't be solved here.
As for your problem with other games, could be several things. The fact that its worst wired then wireless is unusual, but not in such a way that points to a possible cause. When the lag happens, do you notice if any lights on the gateway change? Or do you notice if other computers in the house experience connection issues at the same time?

Awesome answer and thanks for the research on 2k14 for me! Computers do not have any problems when im gaming at the same time. I dont notice any light change on the gateway as well. Is there a way to use the CG3000 as just a modem so I can use a router with it? Or should I go back to cox and get a modem...do they even have just modems? The guy didn't suggest that as an option.

Yes and no. You have to disable about 4 separate things, and even then it still doesn't work exactly like a stand alone modem. And sometimes depending on the firmware, the gateway doesn't let you fully disable them. For instance, you can hide the SSID, but you can't actually disable the wireless on some versions. I can give you instructions if you want, but I will wait for you to decide which way you want to go.
Thats what I would suggest. But I can't promise it will fix the problem your having, since we haven't fully isolated to the gateway. But at least with a stand alone modem and router, you can bypass the router and that will tell you if its a networking issue, or a cable signal issue. Also, keep in mind you would need to buy a router too, and you would better off NOT buying that from Cox. You will find a much better selection in retail, the only downside is then your responsible for configuring the router. I could help with that too though.
They should have modems at the store and on the trucks. And even if they don't you can also buy a modem at Walmart, Costco, Frys, Bestbuy, etc. or online like Newegg.com or Amazon.com. Here is a list of Cox compatible modems. I would suggest either the SB6141 or the DPC3010. SB6141 has better diagnostics.
Yea, I don't know why they push gateways so much. Maybe better profit margins, or maybe some misguided idea that it shows more value in the service. However, since most gateways stink, I don't think it adds any value to the service at all IMO.

Ok whats weird is that instead of hiding my SSID on the gateway I chose to broadcast like normal and I do not lag out of 2k14 as much as i did. I can actually finish games but is laggy here and there. Is that weird? Does hiding my SSID somehow ruin connections?
Anyway, I am really interested in buying my own modem (sb6141) so what routers do you recommend? Also, when I get the sb6141 is it plug and play or do I have to contact cox to have it verified or something like that? Thanks for your help again!

It can. Its mostly a issue with Windows XP and/or older wireless NIC's. They don't like staying connected to wireless connections that are not in their "Preferred Network list". See a Microsoft article here. Its just one of the many reasons why hiding your SSID isn't a worthwhile precaution.
My default suggestion is the Asus RT-N66U, but it may be more router then you need. What kind of devices will you connecting to it? All wireless G devices? Anything using 5Ghz? Do you need features like USB print and file sharing or bandwidth monitoring? Do you have a price range in mind?
Yes. Unless you buy the modem from a Cox store, you will most likly have to call Cox and give them the modems serial number (S/N) and HFC MAC address. There is a automated system you can try too that should come up automatically once you have the modem connected to the cable (similar to the screen that comes up if you dont pay the bill) but I usually only suggest that for new customers, or adding a modem to a new account.
When you call them up, also ask them to make sure you have DOCSIS 3.0 service code for Premier on your account. If not, you will be capped at 32Mbps instead of 50Mbps.
