CBS, ABC, NBC HD channels
I only have basic local channels package - i.e. CBS, NBC, ABC. In the future I may add ESPN HD. Do I need a Cablecard version of HDHomerun?

Yes, in order to view any HDTV channels other than locals you need a CableCARD, device like the SD HomeRun PRIME.
There is also this new Samsung CableCARD Tuner, if you do not need DVR functionality.
