"Cannot send message using the server
smtp.cox.net: my name. The sender address was rejected by the server. Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click TRY LATER". This is one of 2 problems (the other is when i can not receive) that started November, 2014. Today this cleared up in one hour. All of my settings are correct (verified by Cox tech and a forum mod). One computer; no other devices. No router; no wi-fi. I did not check webmail during the recent problem.... i seldom use webmail. Mine is a POP account. Cox had said that this was both a server problem and possibly an Apple Mail problem using Cox. The 2 problems (unable to send .... unable to receive) come and go.
I am posting this today because i had people waiting for my emails when, suddenly, i can no longer send emails. Luckily, they telephoned when they did not get my replies. I think i am not the only one getting this "Cannot send..." dialogue box.

Thanks EdwardH for taking the time to respond. It is possibly true that the "send issues" and "receive issues" are not tied together. They come at different times. Never together. But they both re-occur. All of my settings and ports and Mac Mail have been checked by Cox technicians and by forum moderators.... they are correct. I enjoy my Cox email service. But you said that "the issues have been resolved as TiffanyR said". Several of us were switched to a different server (on the east coast?) for a while. That helped but did not completely resolve the issues. I hope that Cox continues to investigate and does not consider this case closed.

I can understand your frustration with the email issues, Intermittent issues are the hardest to troubleshoot because they happen sporadically. Please contact us any time you run into issues so we can investigate while it is happening.
