cannot send emails

Cannot send any emails to any one. Everytime I send one I get an immediate response: sever error: 550 5.1.1 relaying not allowed. Its like cox has blocked all my outgoing emails. Any ideas what happened? I have checked all my settings and are good. Called cox support Wednesday and the person on the phone had no clue what could be wrong. Did cox change or upgrade a server?

I'd suggest starting out by making sure your email client is setup using the server names as described in this article:

Yes went through all that. Even removed the east out of the settings. Test email sent fine. I did check the authentication box, and it would not send a test email. I am using Microsoft Outlook in Microsoft Office 2010

Sounds like your trying to use Cox's SMTP server when your not on Cox's network. Try going to whatismyip.com and see what ISP it says. Then you either need to use their SMTP server settings or use authentication (user/password) on outbound with SSL on port 465/587.

ppm,

If you are going to use authentication, whether you are on the network or not, you will need to enter the user name (the first part of your email address, before the @cox.net) and the password you use on the website in addition to changing the port number. If you are on the Cox network, you do not need to use authentication and therefore do not need to check the box.

We've been experiencing similar issues in San Diego.  Everything was fine and then over the last few weeks, we have been experiencing sporadic email connection issues.  Especially notable is the failure to authenticate on sending (the 550 error). My neighbor was experiencing similar issues.

I changed my settings, removed the .west and went to secure SSL ports 465/995.  And enabled authentication. (I am on the cox network, so I realize it's not necessary - but 25/110 non-secure wasn't working)

This seemed to work, but we'll have to wait and see if it sticks.

After 2 hours on the phone with cox again, they had no clue. Told me it was a Microsoft issue. So they transferred me to Microsoft and they got it working for me. Went with secure SSL 465/995 and it works good. They did ask why I was using the 110/25 as it is not secure. I told them that is what Cox recommends. They said that is the problem. Been working great since the settings were changed on Friday.

465/995

I want to connect using a hotspot, not just at home using cox.

CruiseDreaming, Do you have the outgoing server set to use SSL with port 465, or is it only giving you a option for TLS on the tablet?

FWIW here are my Windows 8.1 Mail App settings (see the following URL). I use Cox IMAP to sync email between a Win 8.1 Update 1 laptop, a Win 7 desktop, an iPhone 4, iPhone 5S and an iPad 4. These settings allow me to send/receive email on my Cox account while traveling or at home... http://1drv.ms/126kqNA

Yes, it is set to 465.  I can send on my cell phone but not using Wi-Fi unless I am at home.

I have read the instructions, followed them step by step, not once, but several times.

I am pleased to hear that it is working for you, however, it is not for me.

@CruiseDreaming

Do you know who's wifi you're on when it doesn't work?  It might be their wifi blocking the sending of emails.

For two days now my Cox smtp server has been off line. When I use the connection doctor it shows that the connection has failed and suggests that I verify the user name and password.  Same user name and password I have used for the last 10 years.  My pop server is working fine.  I am able to send email; but, I have to do it through my secureserver webmail account.  I did online chat with support to see if there was a reported outage. They were clueless and even suggested that I contact Apple because there must be something wrong with my email software.  I have taken the account down three times and reset it up.  Good connection to pop server; no connection to smtp server?  Has Cox changed or upgraded a smtp server in Hampton Roads recently?  Am I the only person experiencing this issue?
