Can no longer send mail from my iMac

I have been able to send & receive emails until today when in the middle of typing an email it appeared that my Internet went down briefly. When I went to send the email I got the message: Cannot send message using the server cox.net. The smtp connection to server "smtp.cox.net" failed. Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click try Later. The only option highlighted in the box is " cox.net" (Offline).

I have gone to the Connection Doctor. It says:

"Mail was able to connect to the Internet."

"Trying to log in to this SMTP account failed. Verify that the username & password are correct."

Which I have verified & are correct.

I am on an iMac OS X Version 10.9.1

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I would first suggest checking that you can still get on the Internet.  If the Internet connection seems to be working sometimes Mac Mail will put the account in offline mode when these situations occur and usually don't bother to check if it's working again.  I believe under the Mailbox menu there is an option to take all account online.  Give that a try and see if there is any difference.

Yes, I still have Internet. I can receive emails I just can't send them.

When I go to the Mailbox Menu the "Take Accounts Online" is grayed out. I can take them Offline & then go back & put them back Online but I still get the same message as I stated before.

Since that didn't work I'd suggest trying to remove and re-add the SMTP server settings.  Step 8 in this article may prove helpful:  http://ww2.cox.com/residential/support/internet/article.cox?articleId=4602dd20-ff0f-11e0-dee8-000000000000

I'm unable to remove the SMTP server settings so I can re-add the settings. Or if there is a way I'm unable to find where to do that at.

What I did find out which I thought was quite curious is I am able to email pictures from iPhoto on this iMac. I'm also able to send emails from my iPad & iPhone with a different Cox account.

I appreciate your help so far.

Here's another link that may help regarding how to change SMTP settings:

I wanted to give this a few days but the morning I received your reply the test message I had in my Outbox folder went out. I didn't do anything to make it happen. It just magically went out. Since then I've still been able to send messages.

Thank~you for your replies. They were greatly appreciated.

Check your other devices (iPad, iPhone, etc.) that you use to get email and look at the outbox.  It is likely that there is a message or 2 stuck in your outbox that is causing the COX server to think it's being attacked.  Delete the messages from the outbox (turn on airplane mode if it keeps trying to send and you can't delete) and reset your high speed modem.  You may have to call and have COX reset your address as a final step, but this worked for me!

I have the same problem as the person who started this thread, and it started to happen around the same day, except my mail still will not get sent. I have tried everything and the "(offline)" message next to my cox.net server will not disappear. I have been searching online for a solution but to no avail. Help please?

Can you verify the server name you have and the email client you are using?
