Cable card?

What's the cable card for?  Does it decrypt the new encrypted digital signals?  What kind of equipment can it be used on?

Cablecards are credit card-like devices with decryption chips on them that you plug into other devices to allow them to see the encrypted cable signal. When they first came out, some TV's had PC bus slots you could plug the cards in. Now they are mostly used in Tivo's, HDHomerun, and Ceton systems. They allow a flexibility of receiving the cable signal into devices that can record it using software custom to the user. They are fickle though, since they lack the ability to "phone home" for channel updates and they can't request SDV channels without a adapter. See here for the official Cox stuff.

Are there any stand alone DVRs or DVD recorders that will operate with a cable card and decrypt the new Cox signals so I can record on air programming?

A DVD record will mainly focus on DVD's. The more common retail DVR manufactures are Tivo and Moxi and one new company Amulet I haven't heard of. If your able to use a computer, then a cable card tuner like WinTV or HDHomerun will work. If you want to use a desktop with a PCI slot, then look into Ceton.
