Buying/installing 1st router...do I need to upgrade my old Cox modem, too?

Computer / technically illiterate guy here.....bear with me

Ok, I just bought an iPad and want to have home WiFi.   I'm buying my first router this week, an Asus RT-N56U, on recommendation from a friend and also from researching the internet.  I have a two-story house and want good range....any comments on this router?

Anyway, I just now received a message from Cox recommending people upgrade to a newer modem, DOCSIS 3.0.   I am on the Preferred Cox level.   My current  modem is the original one they issued me 7 years ago.    The model is Scientific Atlanta DGI 5120.   I just ran the Cox Speed Test and the numbers were 30 Mbps Download and 5 Mbps Upload.   Do I need to buy a new modem also, or is the one I have ok?   Keep in mind  I know NOTHING about tech specs.....

Thanks for any thoughts and info!

I would say your good to go. That modem will work fine on Preferred and its better to replace only one thing at a time so if the performance starts to act up, you know what did it.

The RT-N56U is a great router. You have a smart friend. The one suggestion I would give is having them or someone else help you set it up. You might be able to get it online, but there are alot of configurations that could make the connection better.

That's... not an unreasonable suggestion.
However, we prefer not to discourage upgrading to DOCSIS 3, since it helps ensure consistent performance and DOCSIS 2 modems are end-of-life anyway.
If you want to upgrade one thing at a time, that's understandable. When you choose a new modem, the current compatibility list can be found at http://bit.ly/CoxCompatibleModems.

30x5 looks like a good speed. If it ain't broke don't fix it!. The Scientific Atlanta  is not the best out there.

If you decide to go with Docsys 3, I like the Cisco products

Cisco products are Scientific Atlanta product. He actually has a Motorola SB5120.

I would say check your signal levels before/if you buy a D3 modem. Signal problems can be magnified when you go to D3, thats why D3 signal specs are tighter in comparison. If signal level are good, and money isn't a issue, buy both, just don't buy them at the same time. Maybe give the new router a few days to try out before upgrading the modem.
