bandwidth with and without router.

I have just upgraded to Ultimate and after a visit from a tech guy who replaced some cable that squirrels had damaged works fine, with one computer. I need to hook up three and I would like them to all be wired connections. I bought a TPLink TL-R600VPN router. It seems that the router drops the bandwidth by a very large % (60-80) Today I tried again to make it work but when I put the router in the system my download bandwidth dropped from around 200 to around 20 but upload is no change at 25-30, this time when I took the router out of the system and rebooted everything my download bandwidth did not come back and is now at 25-30. My Modem is Arris SB8200.

I need to know if a different brand/model of router will solve the problem and if so which one. I am very pleased with the Ultimate program but need to have three computers online with fast bandwidth tests when others are idle.

Nikita,

There are many routers on the market. We can not recommend any router to you. If you check online, you should be able to find a site that will give you a comparison of devices that you can go out & purchase.

Ok, can you point me in the right direction, I am on a limited budget, and can not afford to buy several routers trying to find one that works. Perhaps the one I have is working but such a drop back in bandwidth may be normal? Like many consumers I do not know much about the equipment. With the router in place I am getting about 50% reduction in bandwidth even with second computer turned off. I would eventually like to have three computers running. the router I have (TL-R600VPN) was rated high but not real expensive and is wired. How high do I have to go to get full bandwidth? Are there any settings that would improve this situation that are beyond the default settings. If you can not help, who can?

Hello Nikita. If the router is working correctly (not defective) and configured right, is seems doubtfull you need to spend more money on something different. On the router you mention, the WAN uplink port and the 4 LAN ports are all GigE - but typically, those ports will all 'auto-negotiate' the speed they run at - meaning that whatever you plug into the port, that device and the router will 'negotiate' the speed that they will talk to each other. Sometimes that 'negotiation' results in both devices dropping to a slower speed. That may be what happened, as you mention the modem is now running slower even after disconnecting the router. You might just try changing the setting for WAN ports on modem and router from 'auto-negotiate' to be GigE (1000Mbit). The same would go for the LAN ports on the router assuming the devices you plug into them have GigE network cards. I'd certainly try hard setting everything to GigE before spending more money on equipment you may not need. (Just my 2 cents)
