Accessing POP3/SMTP e-mail in Hong Kong
I will be traveling to Hong Kong in a couple of months, staying in a five-star hotel. On recent trips to mainland China, I have had difficulty downloading POP3 e-mail from Cox and sending SMTP e-mail using Cox. When traveling, I usually get around the SMTP problem by using the Google SMTP server, but Google is now often blocked in mainland China. Is the same thing true in Hong Kong? Does anyone have any suggestions for what to do when I am in Hong Kong? A friend was recently there and had subscribed in advance to a VPN service just because he anticipated such a problem, only to find that he couldn't access his POP3/SMTP e-mail via the VPN in Hong Kong.
Thank you.

Its hard to say for sure. You might want to call the hotel and ask their hospitality department what ports they block and if they have a SMTP relay server. Also, you might ask who the ISP for the hotel is. Then you can find out their procedures. Some ISP will block all access to other SMTP servers except their own. However, the usual work around is to use authentication (user/password) on outbound using SSL on port 465.

Another option would be to use Cox webmail if the alternate SMTP port with authentication does not work. That should work via a VPN tunnel...
For both POP3 and IMAP see this for alternative port settings...
