50 MBps ? Usually between 25-30MBps / Not getting more than 31 MBps

Hi,

Century Link is available in my area, and actually hesitated between COX & CL  to switch from Cox. However, decided to upgrade my internet from 5 MBps to premier ( 50MBMps) with COX . I used speedtest.net and Cox's own speed test. to check the speed. Not getting more than 31 MBps even it is wired connection, usually between 25-30MBps  . I am paying more but not getting more.  I see some people also have similar problems. Any idea ?

Thank you,

Sen

Hi sener,

Can you verify what model modem you have? In order to get the faster speeds, you need to have a compatible DOCSIS 3.0 modem or gateway.

Not sure how you get 5MB=50Mb. 1MB ~ 8Mb. Premier is normally 100Mbps which would equal around 12.5MB. I say around because I am not including overhead, congestion, or peering with the provider. Alot it depends on who your downloading from and how fast they can upload to you.

Can you post some of your results?

Hi Stephanie,

It seems DOCSIS 2.0 - Scientific-Atlanta DPC2100. However, it should support at least 43 Mbps based on item spec.

Thank you,

Sen

Hi Health Edge,

My bad, it seems I misspelled it.  Not MBps, Mbps.

Thank you,

The Docsis 2 modems are our network are only able to support up to 30Mbps download, the numbers are you are referencing are for 256 QAM which our is not network does not support. To go beyond the 30Mbps limit it would require a Docsis 3 modem.
