150 mpbs speed testing at 5 mbps

See subject, have tried a lot of things.  It tested at times at even above 150, but now is consistenly testing at 5.  The link to the cox internet speed tool comes up with an internal service error in a language so I'm using ookla.  There is also lag spikes in the game I'm playing, which is the only reason to go this high with the speeds, and I've turned several of those settings down as well.

The cable goes into my netgear dual channel I'm renting from you guys, this computer is plugged into port 1 with an ethernet connection.  My ethernet card in my computer was bought Christmas and is very good with an updated driver.  I'm not sure the game issues are related to these speed issues or not, as the game is really a ping thing, but still.  I checked ookla just now: 25 download, 4 upload.  So better, but not close to 150.  Also playing the game and the issues persist, again, can not necessairly blame ISP for game lag, but it could be the cause.

You have a separate NIC? Any reason your not using your onboard ethernet connection?

Do you have laptop or another computer you can also try wired to router? Or is this happening on all computers in house?

Last, just as a general tip, you may want to upgrade from the basic netgear gateway Cox rents you to a stand alone router. Especially if your gaming on it, since the gateway has no way to configure port forwarding or QoS or any of the other features required by the average gamer.

Ok thanks for your help, I will upgrade my equipment and get back to the forum if I need more help, appreciate the information!  As feedback, I think cox should be more upfront that their top tier rental equipment is actually below par, but I should be more self-informed.

No problem! And don't get me wrong, its not that Cox is being cheap, since they actually pay more for the gateways then they would for a modem to rent you. I even bet the hardware itself is pretty decent. Where it sometimes fails is the firmware. And since the firmware can ONLY be updated by Cox, it creates this big hassle. Buying a modem not only allows you to pick what kind of router you want, but it gives you complete control of it.

I updated my modem, and having the same issues as I was having before with a little less wealth. Also I can barely use this website right now. I have a tech scheduled tomorrow, but I read the forums and worry that this is a more global cox issue.

There is no global issue.  And I was just giving a suggestion about the gateway along with other suggestions.

Are you doing a speed test connected directly to the modem? Have you tried other computers? Still havent answered why you have a separate NIC.

well it was directly to modem and was measuring very low at 2 mbps at around like 530 pm, now connected through router testing around 23 which is better.  My motherboard network card should work but I was grasping at straws and installed a PCI network card I happened to buy but didn't need immediately.  The same thing was happening with the other network card.  Both have updated drivers.  My brother also has the lag issues on his laptop connecting to the wireless.

Two things stand out when I look from this end.  The first being that the modem you're using isn't suitable for Ultiamte Tier service.  I would look into getting one of the 8 channel DOCSIS 3.0 modems.  The 4 channel modems max out right aroud the speed Ultimate offers so speeds will naturally be inconsistent under those circumstances.  I'm also seeing marginal upstream signal quality when I look at the modem status which could also be a factor.  It may be worth having a technician come out to take a look at the entire situation and make any necessary adjustments/recommendations.

Tech is coming out today, okay, I can upgrade the modem again and return the other one.  My speed last night was at like 23 mpbs and my game I play was running better than it has in a couple weeks.  So still slow but was pleased that it was better.  I still don't trust it is fixed, particularly when I get random big spikes of very slow internet and it's only been a day since the new modem (which I'm replacing again).

Got home for lunch and to work from home, speed measured at 3mbps.  It is definitely functional however.  I mean clearly the modem, even if slightly below par, wouldn't result in this, right?

Actually if it's out of capacity that would definitely explain what is going on.  As for returning the modem, that would be governed by the return policies for wherever it was purchased from.  It doesn't appear the one you're using now came from us.

Okay, whatever, and thanks for explaining how returns work.  The tech was very helpful and hopefully we have continued success with my connection.
