100Mbps down to 10mbps

These past few days my speeds have been dropping. It usually seems to start around 9-10pm. It is so bad the speed tests never finishes during the upload test. :( I can't multi-task cause its like dinosaur internet! lol. I live in the Tulsa, OK area... Does anyone know if they are upgrading or doing something around here?

First, have you done any speed tests? Try Cox's.

Second, are you connecting direct to the modem when you test?

Third, what modem/gateway do you have? Model number should be printed on it.

I tried both with and without a router. Modem model is Zoom 1094 3.0 docsis.Just rand a cox speed test..It got less than 1mbps download than timed out before upload finished.

What speed do you get if you bypass the router?

Also, what are you signal levels? Should be found at 192.168.100.1

And what are your speeds direct to the modem? If 1Mbps, then no clue. Technician?

It usually only happens during a specific time frame. I did it both with and without modem. Same results, but now its starting to act somewhat normal. All sudden I am @ 80mbps down and 5mbps up..  Which isn't my norm but better. I always usually see 100-120mbps and 10mbps(upload)

What tier/speed do you pay for? If you were getting 1Mbps through the router, and 80Mbps not, sounds like a network issue is atleast some part of the problem.

No no, I got the same results with or without a router. Like now, I am getting somewhat normal speeds with and without my router in involved. It'll run somewhat normal until tonight. I am guessing its something on the back end, but who knows.

Good luck then. Communicating with anyone on the back end is near impossible. I have spent months trying to get my problem fixed and I used to work for Cox.

I was hoping it was just a bunch of upgrades going on after hours or something. They did recently buy out another ISP and have been doing a ton of changes. Thanks for the trying to help though!! :D

Hi Chris Werner,

I'd like to take a look at the signal levels and the modem log to see what's going on with your connection.  Please email us your account info at cox.help@cox.com, we'll get this figured out.  In your email include the name and street address listed on the account.

This is interesting. The complaints about serious drop-off in download rates with Cox has been going on for YEARS now. Look at the older forum threads. The Cox tech people assigned to chill out irate customers will go on and on about how it's your problem, not theirs, you need to have someone come out, or maybe you need a new modem. It's all nonsense. Cable internet speeds drop off dramatically from approximately 7 pm to 11 pm on weekdays, when everybody gets home from work and has something to eat. That's been the case for years, and always will be until your neighborhood is completely rewired. It's the responsibility of Cox (and other internet providers) to give you what you're paying for. But you're not going to get it in the evening when their lines are over-used. Either you get your internet work done during the day (from home), or you suffer with connection speeds that are less than half of what you're paying for. Me, I pay for 50 mbps, and during the day I get about about 30 mbps--which is really lightening fast. In the busy evening hours, it drops to about 10. That's what everybody reports. And this has been going on for YEARS. Don't listen to the chill-out artists working for Cox who try to tell you that they're oh so sorry, and it's probably your fault and not theirs. They are conning you, you don't need their Premium package, you'll never get 100 mbps even at eight in the morning. Settle for Preferred, maybe, and wait until the weekend for serious surfing and downloading. Sunday mornings are great. Monday mornings are even better. Try to figure out when most people are online, then do the opposite. And do your internet work at times when the volume is not so high that their wiring can't keep up with the traffic. Remember: they want your money, not your satisfaction. I would quickly shift over to a satellite option, except I'm in an apartment building where a dish can't pick up the satellite properly from my balcony.

When do they say this? Can you give a example?

Do you mean for you? Or for everyone? Because that isn't my experience at all. I have Preferred and have been getting the provisioned speed since day one. Two different houses in two different towns.

Did you want to troubleshoot this issue? Maybe start your own thread and tell us the technical details? Modem? Router? Wired vs Wireless? How are you measuring your speed? Etc

Again, where's your data? I have helped many people here get 100Mbps easy. I don't think your issue is typical.

Doesn't Satellite internet max at 15Mbps? If so, isn't that half as slow as your normal speed? If your going to compare ISP's, atleast pick a ISP type that isn't the slowest. Even DSL is faster then Satellite.

@johnbleroy

I took a look at your connection from here and it appear you're still using an older modem that isn't compatible with the speeds you're in billing for.  I'd suggest looking into upgrading to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem.
