Intermittent internet quality and upstream issues
Hello, I am trying this venue as a last resort to getting a substantial answer to my Cox Internet service challenges. Cox Internet Premiere (grandfathered) 150Mbps\10Mbps Intermittently, internet quality drops from well above 150 Mbps/ 10Mbps to something far less. The primary issue I have is the diminished upstream and huge packet loss that occurs each time. At worst, the upstream drops to 0.9 Mbps and I get packet loss in the 10-30% range. Of course this happens most often after business hours, though not at regular times/days through the week, and never when the techs have shown up. For almost two years I experienced exceptional internet service. Beginning February 14th, the intermittent issues began to occur. Over time I have narrowed the issue down to a degradation of service from/through the Cox. I replaced the modem 3 times, including one of the new Cox Panoramic modems from a Cox store. I simplified my home network to one PC (ethernet), one game console (ethernet), one laptop (wireless), and one cell phone (wireless). Wired devices are plugged straight into the modem/router. Arris SBG7580-AC with latest firmware. 3 tech visits, with the last one checking all the way out to the pole. There is currently an escalated support ticket that has been unassigned for over two weeks. I've been told by 4 different Tier 2 folks that they escalated the ticket and that I would hear back from someone within 24-72 hours. I am currently in the 4th iteration of that... no one has contacted me back yet. I have spent at least 40+ hours of my time trying to troubleshoot and work with Cox support to resolve this. Oh, and I have worked for 20+ years managing small business networks, so I'm not one of those 'techs that are not worth their salt' as one T2 tried to insinuate to me. What is going on? Is this situation being addressed? Is there anything I can do to help resolve this?Solved27KViews0likes7CommentsHorrible Intermittent Lag Spikes when online gaming
For the past 3-4 weeks I have been experiencing horrible lag spikes when gaming, browsing internet or even streaming Twitch.tv I have called Cox over 15 times, spoke to higher-ups, had 4 technicians come by, upgraded my modem+router+power unit + coaxial splitter and so much more to no avail. This has become horrendous to the point of potentially considering switch ISPs. Does anyone have any information on a potential fix coming? From everyone I spoke to at Cox over the phone, there seems to be no ETA on a fix. Apparently a node in my area is over-saturated and causing 80% packet loss... WHICH IS CRAZY BAD!!! Note: I am in Southern Orange County, California.7.2KViews0likes5CommentsDaily outages in my area. UNACCEPTABLE
There are daily internet outages in my area (92026) this is unacceptable! I need to work remotely and with 0.5Mbps upload speeds, it is impossible. I pay for 300 down/ 30 up speeds and rarely reach those speeds AND NO it's not my modem and I refuse to reboot the darn thing again! So far I have not seen any credit applied to my account for the lack of service or any notice of when the issues are going to be resolved permanently. You guys are pushing me to get ATT more every day and I hate ATT but this is just wrong. Get it together COX!!!!.6.4KViews0likes30CommentsInternet quality intermittently bad causing drops of service over the past few weeks
When it works, it works great. Then it doesn't and it keeps dropping for hours. I'm having frequent packet loss and connectivity issues over the past few weeks after several months of low to no issues on 4 different WIRED computers. This happens daily in waves. Sometimes the quality is good for a few hours, but usually it drops every few minutes for hours on end. I've been running ping plotter to monitor for connectivity. https://imgur.com/a/9cRQv7k Usually when it goes out: Actively running Netflix, YouTube, and general web browsing seems uninterrupted unless it's trying to start up a new one. I can still view and hear others on currently joined video calls or streams. The quality of my voice and video degrades to the point that others on the call can't see or hear and eventually I get dropped Just this bit makes me think it's a problem with the upstream channels possibly having noise or an issue in the network in that direction. I've wasted days working with the online support chat and I've calling support. it doesn't seem like they have the tools or know-how to get to the bottom of the issue. Often it seems they jump to conclusions I without evidence and few of the things they have determined: My modem needs a reboot. This is the first thing every time and I've already done it. Everything is fine. This is usually the final conclusion every time I call. A fine Jedi mind trick, but they're not Jedi. There's probably a virus on all my computers and I need Cox Complete Care. I don't have enough bandwidth and I need to upgrade to the Gigablast plan. I feel stupid for even giving this one a try and am not happy about the zero results. It's my modem. I've replaced my modem a number of times due support suggesting the modem is faulty over the years. Never once has it remedied the issue. My current (newest best) modem has been working fine for months before these issues cropped up. Cox says it's the modem. Arris says it's Cox. :-| I need Panoramic WiFi and that will fix it. Nice try on the upsell. Xbox consoles are eating all the bandwidth because they have a lot of graphics. This is laughable and nonsense. Even if it made sense I don't even have an Xbox. They need to send a tech out to look at the cable lines and modem I've had a tech out to look at the lines and they reported the signals and modem look good. All the channels look to be in range and there's no ingress. It feels more like the support channels are really just sales channels. There doesn't appear to be a next step beyond sending out a tech. I'd switch providers, but there's nothing else available. I'm not sure where to go from here.Solved5.7KViews0likes7CommentsStop blaming Cox, you whiners!
Since I first discovered this forum I've read many dozens of questions in which users blame Cox for their email or internet problems. Many others chime in with posts like "Yeah, I have the same problem" or something like "Me too. I'm sick of it. Cox **" But have these whiners called Cox technical support, describing their problem in an intelligible and thoroughly descriptive manner? I can surmise from the posts and replies that the answer is mostly "No". My experience with Cox has been more then satisfactory. I did have to call Cox technical support once for a modem issue that only they could resolve.. And they did, in a heartbeat. If you have internet problems and your device is a PC then I can tell you the primary source of such problems are: - Registry cleaners like Ccleaner et al. If you let programs such as this modify your registry you might as well reinstall Wndows to get it working properly again. - Installing device drivers from "who knows where". - 3rd-party ant-malware software. You don't need that **. Rely on Windows Defender. - Editing your registry or configuration based on info from non-Microsoft websites or upon the advice of your neighbor's cousin's 14 year old "PC guru" son. And the list goes on. I'm an EE and certified IT specialist. Let Windows take care of itself. Uninstall 3rd party anti-malware software. Don't install drivers from ANY of the many "device driver" sites. Don't open emails from sources you don't recognize and don't go browsing where you shouldn't be browsing. Or you could install one of the many Linux distros. But if you're not an expert coder you'll find yourself up the creak without a paddle. At this point all I can say is that I'm running Window 10 with all current updates installed and my device drivers are maintained by appropriate sources. Windows runs great and my Cox internet connectivity is impeccable. If you have a problem, call Cox. Most of the recommendations you may receive here are 3rd party misinformation, even from the moderator (sorry, whoever you are but dems da facts).4.4KViews0likes11CommentsIntermittent disconnects and packet loss
Hello, Issue: Issue 1: Every few minutes or so I get 1-3% packet loss. Sometimes it can go up to 20%, but this usually only happens 1-2 times a day. Issue 2: My internet will drop connection. There is no trigger for this. It happens any time. The odd thing is that when the internet drops, I can still hear my friends talking on discord. I cannot speak back to them, but I will be able to listen to their conversation while I wait for discord to drop me for disconnect issues. It's almost as if my packets being received are coming in fine, while the packets trying to leave are getting lost. When the internet goes out, all the Wi-Fi and ethernet connections disconnect as well. I know this because, my wife's ethernet connected computer disconnects, and the PlayStation on Wi-Fi disconnects. Also, my phone disconnects. None of the lights on the modem change. The internet usually comes back on 1-2 minutes later, but this happens frequently. Usually around every 30 minutes. If I run a tracert to google.com it says that the Destination host is unreachable. My setup: I have a Motorola Gigabyte modem with Docsys 3.0. That is connected to a UBNT Edgerouter X Router (Firmware is up to date), the router is connected to a TL-SG1210P switch, and the switch is connected to an access point for Wi-Fi and 2 computers. The Coaxial is directly connected from the tap to the modem. No splitting. The Coaxial cable has been completely replaced by a Cox technician, and tested for assurance. What has been done: I have had two different technicians come to my house and confirm that the node that feeds internet to the neighborhood is malfunctioning. The first technician setup a test that would check the node directly and report back any problems. She found tons of issues, and put in a work order to fix the node. The node was reported "serviced" in November. The packet loss issues started coming back, and with each day they worsen. The technician has since ghosted me, and will not respond to my recurring issues. The packet loss used to be consistent and around 15-50% loss. Since the node has been service, the issue has lessoned, but still persists. Before this, I had a DIFFERENT technician who didn't understand what packet loss was, but at least believed there was an issue because my upload speed was almost 0. He hooked up his monitor to my modem directly; the problem persisted. I kept trying to convince him that the problem lies with the node, but he didn't understand. I had him switch my modem out for a cox modem to prove to him that it wasn't my modem. The problem still persisted. We hooked my modem back up, and I took him outside to check the line feeding into the tap for my house. The problem persisted. We scoured through my neighborhood, and found the node that distributes internet to everyone, and hooked DIRECTLY into the node. The problem persisted. He called his superior, and the superior said he will have to send a specialist out to service the node, because there is something wrong with it. When the problems started to arise again in December, I tried to contact the technician who left me a work number, but they didn't respond. I tried calling Cox again, and they wanted to send out ANOTHER technician. I cancelled, because I've already been through this loop many times, and if the problem isn't occurring when they show up, then they will say that everything is fine. I am also afraid of getting another incompetent technician. I am willing to jump through some more hoops for technicians if they need more clarification on the issues. Let me know what you would like me to do. Thank you.Solved4.2KViews2likes9CommentsDoes Cox artificially favor Speed-Tests? Real-World speeds slower than SpeedTest results.
I am on the Internet Preferred 150 plan, and in the last few months I've been having issues with my transfer speeds. Based on my plan, I should be getting 150 Mbps down / 10 Mbps up, and results from speedtest.com or fast.com always show my connection meeting or exceeding those transfer rates with speeds around 175 down and 10.5 up on average. The problem is that these speeds are not holding up under sustained real-world loads, particularly on the Upstream side. I operate a Plex Media Server in my home and routinely stream from it throughout the day. In the past I was able to reliably stream at 8 Mbps, but in the last couple of months I have had severe buffering issues and had to bump down to 4 Mbps or less to get a stable stream. I have backed this up with a series of iperf3 tests, all of which show an initial transfer speed of 10 Mbps, which almost immediately drops to 4-4.5 Mbps after about a second of testing. Regular large transfers to other cloud storage services tell a similar story. For the record, I disconnected my router and did a wired test with my laptop connected directly to the modem, which did show an overall increase to 5-5.5 Mbps in iPerf3, but that is still well below the service I pay for. Unless there is a problem with my modem (it has not given me any noteworthy trouble to date), I can't think of any hardware bottlenecks on my end that would limit my speeds, so it really feels like Cox is under-delivering my internet service and masking it by prioritizing speed test traffic.4.1KViews0likes10CommentsInternet cuts out, but with no indication of lost connection
For about 2 weeks now I've had an ongoing battle with my Internet. It is most noticeable when I first turn the PC on, I will be unable to connect to any webpages for 5-10 minutes. Eventually it starts to work but will frequently stop working for 3-5 minutes at a time. During all of this, there is no indication of there being a problem on my modem/router (I have an Arris SBG6700-AC). Wifi seems to work more often than Ethernet, but it also has frequent connection issues. I checked my Event Log on my router's page and I'm getting all kinds of errors. The most common seem to be Received Response to Broadcast Maintenance Request, But no Unicast Maintenance opportunities received - T4 time out SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to receive MAC SYNC frame within time-out period Started Unicast Maintenance Ranging - No Response received - T3 time-out These last 2 only happened once from what I can see, but they are 2 of the 3 most recent errors DHCP WARNING - Non-critical field invalid in response TLV-11 - unrecognized OID Most of the time however it doesn't spit out any error (I've been having issues all day today and there isn't an error log today). As of right now I haven't been able to get my Ethernet to work AT ALL, so I'm currently on Wifi. If you don't want to read this paragraph at the bottom about me complaining about Cox, then just read this: " The Cox Panoramic wifi modem/router that you rent for 11$ a month does not work the way it is advertised, and you are much better off going with a separate modem and router that is meant for providing high speed internet service". This type of internet works for laptops, Netflix, and basic streaming services. But when it comes to playing online video games, forget it. Even if you use the ethernet, you only will get between 200-300Mbps download, and 2.9Mbps upload speed. These speeds still lag when you play online video games". I decided to upgrade my service to cox Gigablast as of 20March2020. With the world under quarantine, especially the entire state of California, I said okay I definitely cannot deal with the Lag on PS4 that I have been dealing anymore. So I went to the local cox store after setting up my new service online and picked up my device. The customer service representative said it wasn't necessary that I rent the device, as I could buy a separate modem and router from Best Buy or where-ever, but it would cost about $400 with a separate modem and router. I decided to try out the cox panoramic modem+router combo that they offer for 11$ a month. I go home, plug it in and it was a super easy set up using the app for it. I connect it to my PS4 and test the connection. This piece of garbage (which is supposed to put out up to 900+ mbps basically almost 1 Gbps) only put out 24.9 Mbps download and 2.4 Mbps upload. This is down right criminal at these speeds. But before I called my lawyer, I decided to call tech support, so that someone could come out and see if the signal needs to be adjusted at my apartments. They are supposed to come out tomorrow (March 23, 2020) and hopefully fix it. Just the fact that I have to go the extra mile, and MAYBE get the issue fixed is absolutely ridiculous. My apartments are literally ONLY able to get Cox service. Isn't this considered a MONOPOLY at this point, since there is no other competition available? I have always had so many issues with cox, and its sad that they can't provide the working class of the America a fast internet service, especially what we are paying them for. I will hopefully remember to make another post tomorrow after PAYING a tech support member a FEE in order to get my SERVICE that I just PAID for to WORK like it is ALREADY SUPPOSED TO. If it doesn't, well maybe I need to start putting this money that I am paying for this BS service towards law school, so that I can sue them into bankruptcy. Either that or call my friend at the local new station and put this company in the spotlight. Oh and if you don't believe me, then why would they sell cox Panoramic Pods separately? I have my PS4 sitting right next to the wifi box and it doesn't do any better than 24.9mbps. if you plug it in via ethernet, the best that I got was just below 300mbps. This is a speed that still lags during a online video game like Call of Duty. If you don't want to read this paragraph above about me complaining about Cox, then just read this: " The Cox Panoramic wifi modem/router that you rent for 11$ a month does not work the way it is advertised, and you are much better off going with a separate modem and router that is meant for providing high speed internet service". All was well until about July 2019. My upload speeds without VPN were 900, and my speeds through my VPN (Cisco AnyConnect) were 250 connecting to my hospital network. After that, my connection without the VPN stayed the same. Through the VPN, however, speeds dropped to about 8. Unusable for my needs. For a short period, speeds went to about 40 for about 2-3 weeks in Sept or Oct, then back to 8. Today I'm at 6. One of my partners, and the IT director of the hospitals have fiber, and the same problem. After extensive testing by the hospital IT team, they determined the problem is definitely on the Cox end. A level 2 or 3 Cox IT employee went to the home of the IT director, ran his own tests, and confirmed the problem is on Cox's end. That was weeks ago. No communication, known action, or resolution. In the mean time, I'm still being charged over $100/month for a service that does not perform anywhere close to advertised, and is useless for my work needs. I have spent 4-5 hours, made over 20 phone calls, and had 2 no show service calls attempting to get a second line (Coax with speeds "Up to 300", which is what I'm told by Cox is my only other option at this time to connect to work with usable speeds). I get nothing but the run around. People say they will help, try to schedule an installation, and the system won't process the order. When I try to follow up with them, they don't answer, return my messages, or respond to my emails. Any assistance or advice would be welcome. Thank you in advance.Solved3.2KViews0likes10Comments
