Ars just wrote an article about the situation and included a statement from Cox. You must upgrade to a DOCSIS 3.1 modem and specifically call Cox and tell them you want to stay on the classic tier. If you do not upgrade to a 3.1 modem, they will eventually downgrade us to the 150 tier. arstechnica.com/.../ Re: Ultimate Classic 300 being "upgraded" to Ultimate with "outdated modem" Please let me know if you have any luck! Re: Ultimate Classic 300 being "upgraded" to Ultimate with "outdated modem" No phone, just internet. AFAIK, Cox doesn't utilize D3.1 at all on the upstream yet (I don't think any cable providers in the US are really doing this yet, just the OFDM downstream channel) I will try emailing Cox at the address you mentioned and see if they are able to provide any more insight. Hoping a rep may be able to shed some light on this here on the forum too maybe. Re: Ultimate Classic 300 being "upgraded" to Ultimate with "outdated modem" The only reason I have the plan is for the 30 Mbps upload speed. 300 or 500 download doesn't matter to me much, I just want my upload, and I don't want to pay Gigablast pricing for it. Seems ridiculous they can reduce my upload speed by 1/3 and frame it as an "upgrade" 😞 and I am potentially stuck paying $150 to get a DOCSIS 3.1 modem. Ultimate Classic 300 being "upgraded" to Ultimate with "outdated modem" Received the below email from Cox and I'm a bit confused by the wording of this email. I'm currently using an SB6183 (16x4) modem. If I upgrade to a DOCSIS 3.1 modem, am I still going to be forced to "upgrade" to the new Ultimate tier with 1/3 the upload speed or will I be able to retain it? ***Begin email from Cox*** We’re making important network upgrades to provide a better internet experience for all of our customers. To do this, we need to move Ultimate Classic 300 plan customers with older modems to the new Ultimate plan on or after Wednesday, March 3, 2021. Your bill will not increase as a result of this change to your internet service plan. Ultimate has download speeds of up to 500 mbps, 60% more than Ultimate Classic 300. Ultimate’s lower upload speeds of up to 10 mbps still support the typical needs of most users like video chatting, gaming and uploading large files. However, you need to update your current modem to enjoy the full increase in download speeds. I don't have anything running on the system at the time of running these tests either. Re: Upload speed issues lately Here are some speed test numbers to illustrate how much the speeds drop. I just ran a speed test early this morning (7 am) and upload speeds are 30+ as they should be. Do you have a way to see if the node is overutilized at certain times? The speed was poor from 5pm until I went to sleep at 10pm. It affects all devices. Tested with wired connection straight to the modem. I can provide screenshots of speed tests at different times if it could help get things looked into. Re: Upload speed issues lately I am already using a standalone modem, same one I've had for years (SB6183) - I'm hoping someone at Cox can check the uSNR from their end to see if there could be noise from a neighbor's line or something. Re: Download speed fine. Poor/intermittent upload speed. I have been having an upload speed issue as well for several days, maybe weeks. I'm in the Orange County, CA region. I already made my own thread before I noticed this one, but I have been getting anywhere from 1-10 Mbps upload speeds lately, used to have no problem hitting 30 (Ultimate tier).
