Sound has gone out and bar appears on picture

On my Contour box, it seems that no matter what channel I select, I see a dark vertical bar on the left side of the screen and there's no sound at all. I've tried rebooting it from within the menu on the box and also did the online reset. Neither solved the problem. How do I get this problem fixed?

I know it's not a problem with my TV because I can view a channel on the antenna without any problems.

    These cable boxes are reissues and supposedly bench-checked for defects.  However, Cox once issued me a cable-box with a dead HDMI port and a telephone modem with a cracked power receptacle.  First step:  exchange the cable-box.

    the dark vertical bar tell me you have a bad screen.
