I recently signed up for the Gigablast plan. I am renting the Panoramic Wifi modem/router from Cox. Hooked it up to the coaxial cable outlet in the wall, and connected via ethernet to my laptop (which has a gigabit ethernet card btw.) Ran speed tests (speedtest.net) several times on different days/hours but the maximum download speed I can get is about 300-350 Mbps. Ran Cox's speedtest, same results. Cox sent out a technician, he unplugged the coaxial cable going into the modem and hooked it up to his meter and got over 1Gbps consistently. He checked all the wires, everything looks good, we did a speedtest again - no change in speeds, still about 300-350 Mbps.
I am using original Cox equipment (modem, coax cable, Cat5E cable - all came in the box with the Panaromic Wifi modem.) I have not connected a separate router. There is only one ethernet connection going from Port1 on the modem to my laptop, no cable in ethernet Port2. I don't understand why I get slower speeds when the device the technician used directly with the coax cable gave 1Gbps speeds consistently. I have tried all the usual things - rebooted the modem, my laptop, checked connections - everything looks good. The tech who came out is very experienced. He said he's never seen anyone actually get 1Gbps in my state of Rhode Island. He said 300-350 Mbps is the maximum I could expect, and that Gigablast is really meant for speed sharing over several devices, not high speeds for one wired device. Is this true?
Thought I'd post this on the forum in case there is a way to achieve 1Gbps downloads (btw uploads are 37Gbps as advertised.) I am considering downgrading to the Preferred 150 or 300 plan otherwise (that's what the technician recommended btw...)

Might be worth looking into a newer generation of Ethernet cable as well. I experience significantly higher speeds with a cat 6a cable.
I am using a Cat6 cable (not Cat5e, sorry my bad.) The cable is more than capable of 1 Gbps speeds, so I have a feeling it's not that... Thanks for the suggestion though.
Not with an ethernet port, no. I have other laptops but they don't have ethernet ports. And the Panoramic Wifi gateway doesn't have a USB port...
Thanks Kevin. I am using Cox supplied equipment (Panoramic Wifi) and I'm testing speeds using a wired connection via a Cat6 cable (also Cox supplied.)
Most of the suggestions in the links above relate to optimizing Wifi connections and using newer routers, neither of which is applicable to my setup.
There really is no reason why I shouldn't be getting the advertised speeds.
The service technician came and left, speeds are still unchanged at about 350 Mbps.
He was a Tier1 contractor who didn't seem to be very experienced (I'm being very kind here.) He didn't even have the tool to measure the raw throughput through the coaxial cable. He checked the wifi settings (my issue is with WIRED connection speeds, not Wifi) made a call to the Cox dispatch office and left saying "There appears to be an external problem in the area, I don't know when it will be fixed. Keep calling customer service every few days for an update."
I'm a bit disappointed with the follow up so far. For starters, you should have sent an experienced Tier2 technician who could do some advanced troubleshooting. Sending a novice contractor for the followup visit, after going back and forth on the forum, is just adding insult to injury. Second, this whole "there's an external issue" sounds like BS to me. Is there really such an issue? What area is impacted? When will it be resolved? Give me some details to back up this claim.
If Cox can't support the advertised Gigablast speeds, please be honest about it. Don't waste my time by giving me the runaround. Be upfront - do I need to downgrade to the Ultimate 300 or the Preferred 150 plan, because you can't support 1Gbps wired download speeds?
