Do you have an -n or -ac router? You will have to define "optimum" because each frequency has its pros and cons: range, bandwidth, compatibility, interference. For example, 2.4 has longer range but smaller throughput; however, 5 has shorter range but larger throughout. It really depends where you'll locate your wireless device and what you'll do with it.

Most routers will let one set up both frequencies with the same login credentials so that devices can automatically switch between the two. Be sure the set this up on your devices, as well.
