Internet Data

Is anyone else having a problem with their internet data skyrocketing?  We have had Cox for over 10 years and last month we went over data.  We haven't even come close in the past.  We were on vacation and it was still using 18GB a day (nothing was on).  We had a new modem installed last week thinking cox then can track the data.  We run 2 PC's- 2 iPads - 1 smart tv - 1 iPhone and have a wireless router.  I checked all the settings on the Smart tv and nothing is running in the background and there are no viruses.  We turn the other devices off when not in use.  We are currently using 84GB/ daily.  This is absurd. We called tech several times and keep getting different answers.  Had a tech out again yesterday and he couldn't help either.  No one can tell us why so much data is being used.  We had to up our plan to unlimited (additional 49.99/month).  I have enclosed a picture of our data readings.  I am at a loss of what to do........

I feel for you, I really do. How could one possibly account for such an increase in daily data consumption with the adroit measures you have already taken and observe?

Unfortunately, and I truly hope I'm wrong in this assumption, but much like many others here who have voiced similar concerns, expecting pertinent answers or acceptable explanations from Cox is akin to pissing up a rope.

How about checking your router?  Don't have any friendly neighbors using your wifi.  When you are away, you could unplug your router to see if usage has gone down.

Turning the router off is one suggestion that can verify whether or not someone is using your network without your knowledge. Also, you can find additional suggestions on data usage and management here: https://www.cox.com/residential/education-center/internet/data-usage.html

Install a version of dd-wrt that supports bandwidth monitoring on your cable modem router.

Then you can monitor your network traffic and see what is being used.

I confess that what I don't know about DD-WRT or Tomato or any of the other alternative measuring tools could fill the Grand Canyon.

I am however, willing to begin the learning curve in order to both discover and utilize an appropriate tool or utility.

What I am wondering is if any similar tool or utility could be successfully installed and function with an ISP-provided gateway such as a Panoramic TG1682.
