Can’t access certain sites after an outage

Hello,

I am typing this on my phone as I cannot access Cox.com from my internet.

there was an outage that started last night around 2am (11/4/2021) in the Laguna Niguel, CA area.

I received a text this afternoon around 12:30PM telling me that “the outage is now clear.”
what happened next is that I am back on the internet, but certain websites (random as far as I can tell) are inaccessible (“this site can’t be reached. xxxxxx unexpectedly closed the connection “) on all devices, consistently.

Some examples of sites that I can NOT reach:

  • cox.com and all its subdomains (hence me typing this on my phone with cellular data)
  • amazon.com
  • target.com
  • zoom.us
  • Dmv.ca.gov

Some sites that I can:

  • linkedin.com
  • ucla.edu
  • google.com
  • cxl.com

I work from home and unfortunately my company site is one of the sites that don’t work.

I have unplugged/plugged the router a few times, reset the router a few times, turned off/on all my devices a few times, and even changed my SSID and password as well. Nothing worked.

Thanks!

    Hi@Ajl
I know how important it is for you to be able to access the websites that are important to you, especially when you work from home. I checked your area and there are no outages at this time. If you are using a VPN are you having these issues while connected to the VPN, if so try to disconnect from the VPN to see if you are able to get to some of those sites that you are not able to reach. Also, try to disable any firewalls that you may have as well.

      Hello Ben!

      thanks for the quick reply.

I have VPN disabled, and even tried disabling the firewall as well.

      still can’t access the sites.

Any other ideas that I could try?

I live in the Lake Forest, CA area and I have had the exactly same issue as mentioned in this post since last night (11/3) around 8pm.

Our router and modem are two separate devices so it’s not an all-in-one modem. Wifi isn’t working at all since the router returned no internet connection errors. When I tested with a wired connection from my device to the modem, I can access few websites only (Google and Facebook). Some sites like Amazon.com, Costco.com , Cox and more including the sites I rely on for my work are inaccessible on all devices.

I am not using a VPN either. I have also tried factory reset both the modem and the router multiple times already but still no luck.

note: there was an outage in our area around 5pm on 11/2, a day before this incident started and we were notified that got fixed at 6:30pm within 2 hrs (11/2)
