work-at-home phone requirements

Was just hired for a work at home position.  VoIP is allowed and have been using Ooma Tela box for five years now with no problems, however the new employer requires all phone "extras" be disabled.  A caller needs to get a busy signal if my phone is in use rather than alert me to a "call waiting/voice mail."  I can disable voice mail but Ooma say they cannot disable call waiting.

This is a mandatory requirement for the job.

My current Cox service is Internet only.  If I add phone, I know it's VoIP but can I ask for call waiting/voice mail be disabled and a caller get a busy signal when my line/number is in use?

  • It depends on the package that you get for phone service. We do have a starter package that does not include any special features. If you do get a package that includes call waiting you can disable it by pressing *38 (or *380 if you are in our Baton Rouge, Macon, Gainesville, Pensacola or Roanoke markets).

Just called Cox.  "Starter package" adds $32/month to my bill as no promotion package.  A full featured package adds $10/month for one year as a promotional period (ups to $29 after a year.)

The rep on the phone said that the features cannot be removed.  Can ALL/ALL of them be bypassed, and a busy signal put in their place, by keypad codes as you mentioned?

  • Most features have a way of being turned off, yes. I can't think of any others that would need to be disabled in order for the line to ring busy though (outside of what you mentioned with voicemail or call waiting). All of the other features deal with either forwarding a call, blocking a call, etc.
