wifi on cox internet, phone and basic cable

My friend has a subscription to Cox for telephone (landline), internet and basic cable (may be supplied by apartment complex)Presently, internet is hardwired to desktop computer. Question is does his box also have wifi? If so how does he go about learning router name and password?

It all depends on the model of the modem.

At a glance, the easiest way to tell is to check if he/she has a modem with more than 1 ethernet port - that usually indicates that it can function as a router, and pretty much all gateways (router/modem combo units) have wifi.  I can't think of a consumer model built in the past 5 years that can't do wifi.

  • Hi Jt3,

The list of Cox-Approved Cable Modems is found at http://bit.ly/CoxCMs. Find the model of your friend's modem in the list, and click on the hyperlink to get more information. Let us know if we can help with any other questions.

Look on the box. If it has a sticker with a network name (SSID) and password (passphrase) it has the capability for Wifi. You can also look for a FCCID.  Wifi may not be enabled, or the password may have been changed, but that will tell you it's technical capability. Anything other then that, would need more info.
