Why does a port scan of my cablemodem show open tcp ports?

did an NMAP scan of my Public IP address and found TCP ports 21, 80, and 1720 listening (completed 3 way handshake).

Why?

Which IP address did you scan?

    192.168.100.1?

    Your external IP address?

    192.168.1.1?

    192.168.0.1?

It was my PUBLIC (non-RFC1918) IP address with nothing else connected to my cablemodem.

Can you copy/paste the results of the scan? Do you have a modem or a gateway?

Your public (non-rfc1918) IP address is the address for your computer.  Your modem is usually a 10.x.x.x address that isn't route-able from the internet.  An nmap scan of your computer's IP address will show the ports YOUR computer has available, not your modem.  The public IP address is bound to your NIC card, not the modem.

Pretty sure its user error over trolling. Trolls aren't usually polite.
