Verizon.net / Blacklisted

Cox / Northern Virginia.

We have 6 cox.net email addresses which are all on the same account.

Our problem is that when we send emails to Verizon.net they just disappear.  There are no bounce backs, no error messages.  Nothing at all.

I called cox but they were no help at all.  I haven't called verizon because I don't have an account there.

The other day I filled out verizon's whitelist form to see if I was being blocked and the reply was that I was not being blocked.  The form is http://my.verizon.com/micro/whitelist/RequestForm.aspx?id=isp

Now I was a little confused about the SMTP Server IP address.  I used 2.  One I got by pinging dc.dc.cox.net, which I got from IP config, and the other I got from ( I can't remember).  Both came back as not being blocked.

Please note:  we use openDNS as our DNS server.

My questions are:

-Does anyone know of a solution to this problem?

-How do I give verizon the correct SMTP IP addy?

_ any other suggestions?

Also....we are not doing any spamming or anything unusual.  One of the accounts is used for business but it's nothing out of the ordinary.  No mass mailings or anything like that.

What do you mean when you say the "SMTP server IP address" ? Do you mean the IP for smtp.cox.net? Sounds like you don't have the typical set up. Could you tell us a little bit about what you have going on?

The verizon form asks for the SMTP server IP address.  I guess it is the smtp.cox.net addy.   I just pinged it.  It comes up as 68.6.19.8 which is owned by Cox.

I"ll try that on the whitelist form.

68.6.19.8 is not blocked either apparently.

I don't have an unusual setup except for openDNS as the DNS server.

This is getting annoying.  Is there a way to email a mod on this forum to get direct help?

Not that I know of. I won't be able to help unless I understand more of what your doing. Why are you pinging dc.dc.cox.net?  Are you seeing that in a trace? A email header?  Amd what do you mean "One of the accounts is used for business"?

What basic troubleshooting have you tried? Sent a blank test email? Can these Verizon email addresses get email from other providers? Are the cox.net address able to email other people? How do you know Verizon isn't getting them?

I originally pinged dc.dc.cox.net because they show up in my ipconfig.  I have tried that IP and I have tried smtp.cox.net's IP addy and both are supposedly not blocked.

The business email address is one on this account that is used for communication only, not mass mailings or anything like that.  It's a home business so we just our one account for everything.  We have 6 email addresses...1 is a business address.

The main verizon customer that does not receive email from us is my in - law so we have communicated about it a whole lot.

Not quite sure how to troubleshoot this at all.  Seems to me verizon is blocking...

The main problem is how to tell how and why your mail is being lost. As a general rule, we know nothing about other providers. I only know a little about Verizon because I have a relative who uses it, so I've been volunteered to work with it on occasion.

Their spam blocking system is somewhat like ours, in that there is no bounce message for spam. It gets filtered to a spam folder that by default is only seen in their webmail interface. If they use POP and read their mail in a desktop program like Outlook or Windows Mail, they will never see mail that Verizon's filters consider spammy unless they go into the webmail page and change that setting to download it, or regularly check their spam folder in webmail.

Now, if they do use webmail and your messages aren't in the spam folder either, or they have it set to download spam, then there's another problem entirely. As you already learned from the whitelist page, you shouldn't be on any decent blacklists unless you're actually spamming, and if Verizon is smart, they don't use any of the psycho vigilante blacklists our server and mail-transfer-agent IPs would be randomly listed on.

But the spam folder and delivery setting would be the first things I'd check. Have the recipient go to http://webmail.verizon.com but I can't really help after that point.

Oh, also, whether in webmail or a desktop program, have the recipient check for any filters that may be relocating or deleting your messages.

Ok, i think we are way off track. Lets break it down.  Please answer the questions to the best of your ability. If you don't know a answer, just respond with "I don't know".

    1. Are you on a Cox Residential internet, Cox Business internet, both, other?

    2. What is the domain you are sending from? Another words, when you reply to your Inlaw with the Verizon email (that he does not get), what email does it say you are sending from? something@cox.net? Other?

    3. Do you run a mail server on site?

    4. Can your in-law not recieve email from ANY of your cox.net email, or just the one you say is for "business".

    5. Is your inlaw recieving email from other @cox.net emails?

    6. Can you send email to other verizon.net emails?

    OK KIp,

I will get their email login and check their spam folder.  It seems unlikely to me that all the verizon ppl we email see us as spammers.  But I will check.

    Thanks ,

    Chris

The spam settings and filter settings of the Verizon accounts would be the main concern at this point. Though it does not sound like the connection or server being blacklisted its possible that Verizon's spam filter is picking up something in the message that others using their email accounts have reported. If they do not see anything in their spam lists then try sending a blank of very brief email with no signature. Typically if a filter is picking it up where its not the email address or Ip address of the sending party its filtering keywords in common with those messages.
