Unable to Access POP3 Server

My mother is no longer able to download e-mail in Outlook 2013. When she tries, she gets an error message saying that the server has rejected her password, which works fine when she accesses her e-mail account through the Web client. The live support technicians insist the problem is with Outlook, so I double-checked the settings and tried connecting to her account on a separate computer using two clients: Outlook 2010 and a freshly-installed version of Mozilla Thunderbird. I also tried changing her password through the Web client, a solution suggested in threads about similar issues. I still get the same "password rejected" error. What is going on?

By chance does your password contain a % character? If so try changing it so that it does not use this character and see if that works.

  • No. When I try to set up the account in Thunderbird, I get "configuration cannot be verified– is the username or password wrong?" In Outlook 2010, I get the same error I got in Outlook 2013 on Mom's computer: "Your e-mail server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password for this account in Account Settings.  The server responded: -ERR Invalid login or password." I know the password is correct, because it works fine when I access her e-mail through Cox's website.

  • Removing the symbol from her password fixed the issue. I wonder why it suddenly caused problems.
