Ultimate upgrade

I just had to pay for a professional install to upgrade my service to 300/30 package. I own a SB6190 modem and was told it will work with this package. Tech gets here, does nothing but make sure signal is good and says I can't get 300 unless I rent an SB6183 from Cox for $9.99 a month.  Why should I have to pay to rent a modem for a package that mine will work. I am still getting 150/10 speeds that I had before this upgrade. Absolutely no difference in speed.

Tell the tech to get his head out of his ***.  He doesn't know what he's talking about.  Was he a contractor?  Anyway, the 6190 is 32/8 channels, the 6183 is only 16/4.  Both are approved for Ultimate service per the list here.  Baring other problems, the 6190 should work fine for you.  As far as speeds, someone from Cox may have to update your account to Ultimate.  You can try calling in or maybe a Mod here can take care of it ... you can try emailing them at cox.help@cox.com

Good luck, hope you get this straightened out.

Yeah, I argued back and forth about it and he didn't seem to know much.  He said my power levels were fine and took my attenuator off the modem. It put my upload power is down to ~28.  I put more back on to bring it up to ~40.  I know the other 6190 problems and deal with them accordingly (until Cox releases the updated firmware from March).  When I said I did not want to trade and got this one to take advantage of 32 channels, he didn't seem to understand that.  He was a contractor.

I am a network technician, and understand all about this.  I am pissed that I had to pay a $50 charge for nothing...  He said to call and schedule another appointment for another tech to come out and replace lines and stuff.  I said isn't that why you are here to do that work?  He said he can only check line levels and that's it.  Why did I pay $50 for something I can do myself and know more about.  Also, the line running from street to modem direct was replaced 2 years ago and has no noise issues on it.

Well it looks like Cox did something because suddenly I am getting the 300/30 speeds now.

I wish the contracting companies didn't up sell their own equipment.  Cox should not allow this. Someone who doesn't know better would actually fall for this...

Glad they got it moving for you Mike.  Contractors, they are the same regardless of company or location.  I've had many run ins with them.  A contractor for a communications company I don't use (not Cox) dug a 5' deep hole in my front lawn to fix a problem with my neighbor's installation.  They put a fence around it and left ... it took me 3 weeks, multiple calls to the utility and 2 calls to my state's public utilities commission to get it filled it.  Maybe it's the old $$$$ but they all keep using contractors, they don't seam to care how much bad will they create.
