Ultimate Internet and Digital Phone

In my area (Connecticut) the speed of Ultimate Internet was recently increased to 300Mps.  While this is great, Cox is not able to provide a phone/modem combo to take advantage of the speed increase unless you rent the TG2472 for an additional $9.99/month.  I have been told the additional rental is due to the TG2472 also having a wifi/router included.  So basically Cox is charging me for the Ultimate Internet but unless I pony up another $9.99 per month for features I don't need, I can't utilize the increased speed along with the digital phone.  Is there another way to do this without me renting another device?  I currently have the DPQ3212.

  • It's kind of a catch-22.  You need a 16x4 or 32x8 DOCSIS 3 modem to take advantage of Ultimate speeds.  You can continue to use the free (included in phone service) 3212 for phone only and add an SB6183 (16/4) or SB6190 (32x8) for internet.  You would have to purchase the modem but it's yours, no monthly payment to Cox.  Another option: cancel the Cox phone service and use the monthly savings to pay off your modem.  Hopefully, you will save enough each month to pay for the modem in 3-4 months.  If you need to keep a landline, you can go with a VoIP service like Google Voice using an adapter like Obihai or OOma.
