Trouble in Northwest Arkansas? Very slow downstream, upstream is normal. Multiple friends having same issue

Over the last week, including right now (11:00 PM CST) myself and others in the Fayetteville, Springdale, Rogers area of Arkansas are experiencing extremely low downstream speeds.  I have premier and I'm only getting 8 Mbps down right now, but my upstream is normal at 30 Mbps.  Typically I get about 64 Mbps according to the cox.net speed test.  Is there something going on in this area causing these widespread issues?

I called support and someone is coming out on Sunday, but this seems like a bigger issue than just me, so I was hoping there might be an answer here.

  • Graften,

After some time monitoring the download speeds, I would suggest that you make the DSLReports.com thread the answer to this, your thread. Not forgetting that the user CoxVegas, and whomever worked with him, had everything to do with the solution of our download issue.

  • In my case it started Thursday afternoon after loosing 4 download channels. They got it to work, but last night the downloads were bad. At this point I also believe it's an issue with our area. I have 2 threads going.

Any word? Tech came out on Sunday, didn't find much but removed a TX booster from the line, seemed to be fine.  Today (Tuesday) I am only getting 19Mbs down and upload is fine... same as before

I'm having the same problem and have had it 4 out of the last 6 nights since the maintenance on 5/7 (morning of 5/8).  Today I'm only getting around 1% packetloss according to PingPlotter thought he phone rep tested it at 5% and I'm getting between 8-12Mbps down on my 50Mbps business line.  Previous nights I was getting 5-7% packet loss and 5-6Mbps down.

The problem appears to be between 70.183.71.84 and 70.183.71.60, the second being my 4th hop where the packet loss actually starts.  I've seen several others reporting this issue in Bentonville, Rogers, Springdale, Fayetteville, etc... over the last few nights, it seems to occur mostly between 7-Midnight, which leads me to believe there's a portion of Cox's network in the area that's over capacity/overloaded and/or simply failing under high load.

I have a tech coming out in a couple of hours, but there's nothing wrong with my connection.  Signal to noise ratios are good and 0 packet loss between my modem and it's next hop.

Here's my packet loss over the last hour, note it starts at the fourth hop, indicating the problem is not my connection.  Hop 2 is my cable modem, 3-5+ are Cox IPs.

  • The drop in download speeds has been happening on and off for several months that I've noticed. Assuming that this would happen again tonight, I took the liberty to record my speed tests for today. Notice in the afternoon everything was ok, now it isn't. Speedtest.net test show a similar trend at the bottom of the table.

  • And as it's usually expected, the download speeds go back to normal after 10 or 10:30pm. It's flat out obvious that something with the Cox network completely fails during peak hours, particularly on weekdays. I've yet to see a report from an engineer that has been able to figure this out.

If anybody suggests that this issue is recent, I can guarantee you that it has happened on and off for several months now, way before any firmware or downstream/upstream channel issues have happened.

What's the deal Cox? You have 2 counties that are having terrible issues and not one word has been said in explanation. This definitely doesn't look like Premier service:

Could you try getting some trace routes to different hosts and posting the results?

well at this particular moment my speed is fine.  I've noticed though, that the two days that my speed test gives good results the Cox network indicator says "No."  Just coincidence?  What causes the No when I am clearly connected through cox?
