Speed capped at 30mbps despite having Premier service and a very fast modem Arris SB6190

Upgraded to a new modem expecting that with 32x8 (understanding Cox is only capable of 24x4) that I would at least see something close to the speeds I am paying for (Premier service).  No matter what connection I user (wireless N or wired direct to modem) I only see speeds at 30bmps and no higher.  Hoping to actually get what I am paying for.  If I can't get this resolved probably need to evaluate Verizon FIOS.

  • Hi btvbva,

I'd like to see what's going on with your connection. You should definitely get faster speeds when connected directly to the modem. What is the fastest you've seen with a speed test? We can also verify that you have the correct codes on the account to achieve the speeds you should have.

Were you getting normal speeds with the old modem? Also, just to confirm, you have tested the speeds directly wired to the SB6190?

If so, I would suggest having a moderator here or someone at Cox check the service code on your account and config file on your modem to make sure they match the service you are paying for. I know Cox was capping people's accounts at 32Mbps if they had a DOCSIS 2.0 modems (and some older D3.0 models) on their account, even if their plan allowed for more.

Are you in Phoenix?  Are you testing using speedtest.net?

Try fast.com or speed.googlefiber.net and get a 2nd opinion on the speed.

2nd it does sound like your service is capped at Docsis2.0 speeds, a mod or admin here can check your account to see if your modem is provisioned at the correct level.

Tested connected directly to modem. Speed is same as was previously receiving with old modem. Hampton Roads market. Tested with Cox tool, Speakeasy, Google and all have similar results.

Something appears to have changed as I am now seeing downstream speeds in excess of 100mbps.

  • Are you changing around any of the hardware that is connected to your modem? It looks like whichever device is currently connected to the modem is limited to 100 Mbps (possibly an older router?)
