Speed around 30 Mbps on Internet Premier package

I installed the connection last month. Speeds were around 130 Mbps for the first few days but I've noticed that throughout the past week speeds have been hovering around the 30 Mbps mark. I'm guessing that my connection is capped at 30 Mbps.

Could someone tell me what's wrong? I have a Cox DOCSIS 3.0 modem that I acquired from my friend so technically that shouldn't be the problem. Any help would be appreciated.

  • Hello,

We can certainly look into this issue for you. Are you currently using a wireless or wired connection?

    Thanks,

  • Hi,

    Thank you for the response.

I'm using wireless most of the time. However, I've connected my laptop with a wire numerous times and find no difference at all. In fact, at this very moment I'm connected with a wire and the download speed is 29.49 Mbps instead of the promised 150 Mbps.

I looked at the modem from here and it's reporting the 2.4Ghz wifi radio unusable due to being saturated with interference. Does your laptop support 5Ghz wifi? That would probably work better in your situation.

  • Like I said, it doesn't seem that transmission from the modem to my laptop is the issue at all. I've tried connecting with a wire.

Could you please check if there is a problem on your end? It seems like I've been capped at 30 Mbps here.

    Thank you for the help.

  • I don't see anything abnormal happening with the modem at the moment. The history looks good and signal levels look pretty good as well. When I pinged your modem for a few minutes I did not detect any packet loss. The only thing we can see from here is the wireless interference that Chris mentioned previously. Is this a consistent speed lately or just certain times of the day?

  • The speeds are around 30 Mbps throughout the day. I'm considering downgrading the Internet plan if the speeds continue like this. I'm essentially getting the same speed as my friend who's subscribed to a 50 Mbps package.

Did you ever check to see if your laptop support 5Ghz wifi?

That'll give you some relief from the 2.4Ghz congestion I'm seeing at least. Do you know what wireless encryption type you're using?
