Slow or timing-out DNS lookups -- still looking for relief -- Part Deux

I asked a question with this title (minus the Part Deux) and it's still here but for whatever reason I don't see a "Reply" button or other option for adding to that thread, so I'm continuing the story here.

First, thanks to ChrisL for the July 29 reply to the original thread. I've basically tried all that stuff and still have the same issues.

Second, as of today, I am still seeing delays and lookup failures even for the cox e-mail servers (pop and smtp) not to mention timeouts reported by browsers looking up common servers like yahoo and gmail. It took me several tries to get logged into this support forum, if you appreciate irony.

Third, as I indicated before, my next diagnostic effort is to get FIOS Internet service. I will not drop Cox immediately. I'll get FIOS just for my Win 10 laptop and keep the rest of my home network on Cox for now, at least until I see whether my FIOS connection eliminates the DNS issues. If it does, then I'll be migrating off Cox (Internet and TV) as soon as I can get my spouse weaned off her cox.net e-mail account.

I am very disappointed and we have used Cox for a long time with generally good experience but no one at Cox seems to be able to help me.

My concern here is this could be an apples to oranges comparison. It might be more interesting to see if using a different modem without a built-in router help.

Chris--Thanks.  I considered changing modems, but the one I have is listed as supported by Cox, and the Cox tech who came here looked at it (including its logs,  etc.) and said he saw no problems.

With the FIOS setup I will be getting a separate modem for that connection (one provided by Verizon). If the FIOS setup in fact clears up my DHS resolution issues I suppose it might be because of the new modem, but  I think the easiest thing for me would be to just go with them--I have spent WAY too much time on this issue.

Don't forget that just because a modem is approved doesn't necessarily mean it hasn't or won't fail. Equipment failures are a very common cause for issues customers experience. You could try doing a factory reset on your gateway and see if that helps any.

Just an update: Got FIOS installed yesterday, for my machine only (left existing home network w/Cox Internet service in place, which is what my wife is using.)

    DNS lookup/resolution completely disappeared.

Conclusion: DNS problem on Cox is either: (1) caused by the COx-approved and recently inspected Motorola Surfboard modem/router/wifi box, or (2) some problem with configuration of my account at Cox, which the techs I have been able to reach have not been able to locate.

My wife says her more or less identical Win10 system is working fine (on the Cox connection) but I have not personally checked out her system's performance to see what she considers "fine."  Assuming her system is working "fine" (w/o DNS issues), that suggests (2) above is the issue.  I would hope someone up the support escalation chain at Cox who is expert on DNS would check into this very odd situation .

Not sure where I go from here.

I'm still wondering about the modem itself. Keep in mind being that it is a gateway it is your primary DNS server.
